LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) - A pit bull owner convicted of second-degree murder after his dogs fatally mauled a woman was sentenced Friday to 15 years to life in prison.
Alex Donald Jackson, 31, was convicted last month in the death of Pamela Devitt. The 63-year-old retiree was taking a morning stroll in the high desert town of Littlerock when four of Jackson's dogs leaped over a fence and attacked her in the street.
She was alone, didn't have a phone and no one was nearby. By the time help arrived, she had been bitten 150 to 200 times from head to toe and an arm was severed. She died from blood loss.

I spent Mar till July recovering from an encounter with a pit bull. I was walking my Great Dane when we encountered a Pit Bull off the leash. I was able to keep the dogs apart (my Dane was on a leash) but I wound up severing all four tendons in my right hand from the stress place on the hand. Most painful and lengthy recovery I’ve ever had including two neck fusions and a shoulder repair. As my surgeon said, I’ve lived an active life.
We’ve given up on walking our dogs since no one seems to follow the leash laws.
2nd degree murder?
That would imply he intentionally “sicked” the dog on her, though it was not premeditated.
Personally, I’m all for first degree manslaughter in a case like this.
I carry a spray bottle of pure ammonia with me when I go on walks. Would rather carry a loaded pistol ... but you make do with whatcha got! Someone told me once that he sprayed a pitbull (it was behind an adjacent fence and a constant nuisance) just ONCE and the thing never barked or snarled or even bothered with him again.
Is your Great Dane doing okay?
Sorry to hear about your hand, a miracle you were able to keep the dogs apart.
The size of a Dane and a the ferociousness of a pitbull getting into it wouldn’t be pretty.
I confess that if I were in a neighborhood where there was a risk of someone having a potentially dangerous dog, I’d walk with a little league aluminum bat (I actually have one). Any attacking dog gets it first to the head. Both hands. Swinging to kill.
I have the bat because where I live we go for walks in the moonlight and there are lots of wild animals, including coyotes.
She’s fine now. It’s her family...

Just shoot the dogs. I say that as a dog owner.
Euthanize all Pit Bulls.
Murder?
I think the couple in San Francisco, a few years back, were convicted of manslaughter.
Murder is intent.
Manslaughter is negligence...
A 1,000,000 volt jolt!
From this account and others from the time it happened this idiot had full knowledge of the danger to people of these dogs and many witnesses came forward.
I don’t know about the difference in the two charges but it seems to me this idiot got what he deserved.

Generally speaking...
The woman, Knoller was convicted of second-degree murder and it held through the appeals process.
“On June 1, 2007, the California Supreme Court rejected the Court of Appeal’s decision, ruling that implied malice required proof that a defendant acted with “conscious disregard” of the danger to human life.[20] The Court remanded the case to the trial court to reconsider whether to allow the second degree murder conviction to stand, in light of this new reasoning.[21][22] The San Francisco Superior Court reinstated the conviction for second-degree murder, and on September 22, 2008, the court sentenced Knoller to 15 years to life”

LOL!!!
I’m stupid.
Hell, I usually get it on Mondays but, the weekend’s looking good...
I think pit bulls should be bred out of existence. There are too many of these tragedies.
No your not. :-)
I remember that case well because I followed it but couldn’t remember what happened through the appeals process.
That Knoller woman was a real dirtbag.
