Hong Kong Protesters Are Communicating Via A Mobile App That Doesn't Actually Use The Internet
Business Insider ^ | 09/30/2014 | James Cook

Thousands of pro-democracy protesters are taking to the streets of Hong Kong ahead of a national holiday on Wednesday, and they're using a messaging app to keep in touch and defy censorship.

FireChat is a messaging app built by the San Francisco-based company Open Garden, which creates products facilitating a more open, decentralized internet. What makes the app fascinating is that it doesn't require the internet for local chat, instead allowing people to connect via Bluetooth.

When you first download FireChat, the app doesn't let on that it has become a hub for pro-democracy protesters around the world. Instead, the app suggests that you use it to share photos from concerts or music festivals.

Cool thing to know. Always nice to have a backup communication mechanism on hand in case the normal grid goes down for any accidental (or intentional) reason.

connect via Bluetooth

With that limited range, cannot they just lift their heads and talk with each other directly?

It is IMPORTANT that we learn from these episodes,
we will need the lessons that are being taught.

My take is that a group of connected users creates a network that is as large as the group, as long as every member of the group stays in range of at least one other member. So instead of point-to-point, you might relay through my phone, to some other guy, and finally to your target.

Basically, the idea is to create an ad-hoc network among willing participants.

That said, I'm not sure why Bluetooth is better for this than WiFi, other than the fact that an app probably doesn't have the rights to modify the device's WiFi settings, so a new communications protocol was created for Bluetooth.

Proof that Obama’s Brown Shirt army, as well equipped as the real army will not stand a chance against American citizens fed up with the attempted take over of the country by the marxists. What a couple of million in Hong Kong can do 300 plus million in America can do better. Madame Guillotine awaits.

Yes - but are the IDs traceable?
Is perfect for the secret police to come knocking on your door - maybe after the fact, but...

a) probably, but that would be audible and you’d be easy to identify
b) multiple people yelling at each other would lower the signal to noise ratio
c) you could extend the reach via multiple message hops
d) designed for use where people density is high. I believe hong kong would satisfy that constraint. :-)

You mean like if Obama shuts off the internet for a 'national emergency' that will coincidentally take place the morning of January 20, 2017?

That would be one theoretical example, yes.

Have you seen the size of this protest ?

As to the technology, it basically turns each phone into a micro ‘well tower’ as long as one of the phones can reach the next, you have comm. through all the phones

People forget that the fundamentals of the internet were designed to scale across and make it impossible for networks to fail or be shut down for long.

All it takes is the right application to properly use the hardware to do what you want.

“...will not stand a chance against American citizens fed up...”

Oh, yea, I don’t see any such people being fed up. If they aren’t fed up by now, when will they be?

So far I don’t know of even one person who has taken up Ann Barnhardt’s challenge to join her in a Federal tax strike. She has lost home and property to the regime due to her tax strike, and states that she is confident that she is in the right by not forking over one more pretty copper to them.

Can you report on anyone who is actually fed up beside her and Doctor Lieutenant Colonel Terry Lakin?
