Road salt supply low, demand high as winter looms

The reward for surviving last winter’s frigid temperatures and record snowfall, several states are learning, is drastic price increases for road salt—in some cases, five times as expensive as last season.

And that’s even if they can get it.

Replenishing stockpiles is proving challenging, especially for some Midwestern states, after salt supplies were depleted to tame icy roads last winter. Price increases of at least 20 percent have been common in several cities, including Boston and Raleigh, North Carolina. …

I was glad when living in Alaska they used sand and gravel to deal with icy roads over salt.

They have to keep the automotive industry on foreign soil going. The more road salt, the sooner the desperate will seek more mortgages on $40,000+ vehicles.

Let us also not forget that certain states reduced their order for ice melting compounds based solely off of the claims of global warming, with hilarious results.

Shortage, no, but they’re raising the prices, most likely due to the average fuel prices and the government bureaucracies piling on more regulations.

I have an idea, California can use reverse osmosis on ocean water to purify and use to solve their water shortage and they can sell salt to the Northern statesto defray the desalination costs.
