Yankees star Derek Jeter bows out at Fenway
Boston Globe ^ | Dan Shaughnessy

It’s the same ballpark where Babe Ruth played his rookie season in 1914. It’s the same hardball theater where Ted Williams homered on his final big league swing, Sept. 28, 1960. It’s where Mickey Mantle made his last out on the same date in 1968.

And on Sunday, it’s where Derek Sanderson Jeter will finish a 20-year major league career that defined a game and an era.

Cities, teams, ballparks, legends, dates. Everything connects in baseball. Degrees of separation are minimal. Ruth played with Lefty Gomez, who played with Early Wynn, who played with Tommy John, who played with Don Mattingly, who played with . . . Jeter.

And Teddy Ballgame played with Ike Delock, who played with Yaz, who played with Wade Boggs, who played with . . . Jeter.

Even to Red Sox fans, who hate the Yankees in a relatively good-natured way, Jeter is a baseball great.

I’m a huge Yankee fan - have been all my life. One of the highlights of my life was a private tour of Yankee Stadium in 2005...

In spite of my comments elsewhere in this thread about the liberal Derek Jeter, I understand and appreciate what you've posted. Yankee Stadium ("The House that Ruth Built") is a very special venue. I'm one of the minority thinking the new park does justice to the original. From my college days, I have a number of friends from Alabama. Since like me, they're all old guys, predating the Braves moving to Atlanta, they're still Yankee fans in spite of being in the Heart of Dixie. :)

Also, Paul Konerko’s last day.

Hall of Famer?

He played well. He played clean. And his off field life was quiet.

He IS the player that your aspiring ball players should emulate.

I don’t know his politics. I don’t care. He was a baseball player and his vote counts as much as mine.

He was excellent at what he did. That’s good enough for me.

And I am a Red Sox fan. (He is no Bucky F’ing Dent.)

Is he finally gone? Talk about your long goodbyes...

On the positive side, it's better than hearing about the Ray Rice issue.

Geesh, just retire already. His goodbye is dragging on as long as my divorce did.

Maybe, maybe not. You’re assuming quite a few things there.

“And I am a Red Sox fan.”

I’m a Sox fan too and watched today-—and watched the video of his walk-off and celebration the other night.

A great rivalry-—a great player.

I have a lady friend who is a devoted Sox fan and hates the Yankees with a passion I have rarely seen in a sports fan.

But, the only thing she can manage to say about Jeter is that "he's SO hot."

Well, Derek Jeter was a leftist supporting the usurper in both of the stolen elections. But yes, sadly, you're right. His vote counts as much as that of a Patriot. It's a pity that my vote -- which has always been for Conservatives since I proudly pulled the lever (remember those?) for Barry Goldwater in 1964 -- is canceled out by the likes of Al Sharpton and other deceitful abortionists.

I don't know how it could be implemented nowadays, but I'd like to see a return to voting model set forth by the Founding Fathers of a limited form of enfranchisement. Tom Tancredo's idea of a civics literacy test was a good a idea but, alas, the devil would've been in the details. Frankly, I've never thought the notion of "one man, one vote" was constitutional. It gives undue power at the ballot box to liberals whose aim is to destroy America though abortion, sodomy and gun-grabbing.

Beckel’s a good one to talk about Jeter’s sex life. Beckel was having a prostitute come to his house when his wife and child were away, and then paid her with a check when she tried to blackmail him. Dumb a$$ should be cleaning up dog $hit for a living.

There’s a woman who hangs around down at the corner who claims that, for fifty bucks, she’ll be your very own Bare Ruth.

Interested? ;-)

I am a Met fan - I am true to the Orange and Blue. Maybe there has been a classier player in NYC sports, than Jeter, but I sure can’t recall him.

It didn’t in 1980. Or 1984.

When we have a candidate, the system works just fine.

All we need is a candidate.
