COLUMBIA, SC An S.C. trooper who stopped a man for a seat belt violation outside Columbia and then shot him apparently without provocation was arrested Wednesday and charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
Sean Groubert, 31, a lance corporal who was fired from the Highway Patrol after the shooting incident, now faces 20 years in prison if convicted of wrongfully shooting the driver, Levar Jones.
Groubert was booked Wednesday evening at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. He was fired from the patrol last Friday.
Wednesday night, in a hearing at the jail, Magistrate Ethel Brewer set Grouberts bond at $75,000.
A video of the Sept. 4 shooting incident was played at Grouberts bond hearing.
The video shows Groubert firing repeatedly at Jones, who was not armed and who was not behaving aggressively. Jones was struck at least once, in the hip. He spent time in the hospital and is now out of the hospital recuperating.

Cops Gone Wild
“assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature” - Gotta remember to ask for that charge in case I ever shoot anyone.
"Ohhh (bleeep). I'm in deep (bleep) now!"
This trooper just flips out and starts blazing away.
Dude standing outside the car, gets asked for his license.
Cop shoots him when he reaches for it.
And that wasn’t a dive.
Cop is an idiot.
He needs to be off the road.
Bet he wishes he didn’t have a dashcam now...
Saw the video. It appears that the cop ordered him to show his drivers license and when the gu went back in the car to get it, the cop opened fire, claiming he thought the guy was going after a gun. As I watched, my first instinct sad the guy was just trying to comply.
You mean, in case you attempt to murder someone, I assume.
I saw the video on national news last night. That little punk cop needs to be sent to prison and share a cell with “Big Bubba” who hasn’t seen a woman in 25 years. Dude that was shot will get millions in a lawsuit; and he should.
Lucky for him, he was in a rural small-town environment and officers were understanding. He'd tell them that he fought in World War II to keep that type of nanny state crap out of this country and he wasn't about to obey it.
Dad passed before Bill Clinton served his first month as POTUS. I can only imagine what he would say now.
As I watched, my first instinct sad the guy was just trying to comply.

I saw the video also, and your “first instinct” was exactly right.
My question is how did someone this incompetent get a badge and a gun
If he had just admitted he was a scared little p*$$y and shot out of fear, he MIGHT HAVE been able to resign - but he LIED and tried to say the victim acted aggressively.
Well, good news is the victim is recovering and I am guessing he is going to be living a life of luxury soon.
The cop even shot once after the guy backed away and had his hands up.
And only hit him once...
I hate seatbelts - feel like I am being choked.
I almost never wear one but might have to rethink that policy.
It was a total freak out, the cop just suddenly went nutsoid.
Even better, the guy took his off to get out of the vehicle, and the cop was going to bust him for that.
Just watched the video. That doesn’t look good at all.It did appear as if the guy was just trying to comply with the cop’s instructions.
He pulled the trigger twice after the guy backed away with his hands in the air.
Lucky for him this cop is a piss-poor shot.
In this case, the cop messed up.
