A Haverhill carpenter and father of two on welfare who scratched his way to $1 million on a state Lottery ticket five weeks ago was held on $50,000 bond today on a slew of drug possession and trafficking charges.

Gary L. Bond, 32, was arrested yesterday after Haverhill cops executed a search warrant at his apartment on Arch Street where they found more than an ounce of marijuana, a marijuana growing operation under a tent, three oxycontin pills and 21 grams of cocaine, prosecutors said.

3 pills/ Big deal. And of course if they were on welfare BEFORE the lottery winning it is likely they never thought of turning those EBT cards in.Not that these people are poster kids but some of the things we jail people for or charge them with are just ridiculous.

In MA, he would have been OK except for the cocaine, I think. Maybe they’re piling on because he had some problems in the past, and the state is jealous he got a Lottery payout.

He figured if the state could ‘steal’ 350 thou that he could double his winnings by cornering the local coke market.

Didn’t they used to make Welfare Recipients sort of settle up old bills and taxes etc BEFORE the check was issued.

I am sure a couple of ambulance chasers got involved and figured it was ‘unconstitutional’ to force people to pay their old debts....

He’s a guy that doesn’t understand that once you have “legal” money, you become a target of the government.
