There are plenty of benefits to living in big cities like New York and San Francisco.
But do they really offer the highest quality of life?
Residential resource company Livability recently released its annual list of the 100 best places to live in the US, looking at factors like access to schools, hospitals, and infrastructure; affordability and income; and how residents take advantage of those opportunities. Livability looked at more than 2,000 small- to mid-size cities in the US, with populations ranging from 20,000 to 350,000, to compile its ranking.
20. Eugene, Oregon
Located near the McKenzie and Willamette rivers, Eugene is an outdoorsy city with tons of water sports and a health-conscious attitude. The city is also home to the University of Oregon and has numerous performing arts and cultural venues.

19. Rockville, Maryland
Rockville is a wealthy city on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. It is home to bio-medical and technology companies, with a 100,000-square-foot library and a popular town square.

18. Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City offers a ton of recreational activities for residents, thanks to its proximity to the mountains and ski resorts. The University of Utah lends a lot to the city's culture.

17. Overland Park, Kansas
Livability gave Overland Park, the second-largest city in Kansas, high marks with regards to its sports facilities and schools. The city attracts families and young professionals with a good balance of residential, retail, and office space.

16. Santa Barbara, California

Interesting that they list all of these Bay Area towns as ‘small’ and livable.....Because SF to San Jose and Oakland to San Jose is one mass of people, congestion, and crazies living a face paced, expensive, and liberal life there is NO WAY it is livable.
Why would anyone chose to live in Santa Clara or San Mateo or even Palo Alto if they didn’t have to (for work and family)? These places are the epitome of the elite beating the heck out of those who work hard to get by.
Stupid report and there are only a few conservative spots in the whole of the list
Personally, I prefer McKinney, Texas.
No surprise. American colleges are fun zones. Nothing wrong with that, per se, as long as education still happens, as it often does, but still: colleges are highly subsidized providers of athletic, cultural, and other entertainment options, and the benefits spill over to the community.
6. Berkeley, California
Aside from hosting the campus of the highly regarded UC Berkeley, the San Francisco Bay town is smack uo against Oakland California home of Gangster rap and the hideous culture that spawned kit, landing on Jivability’s lists of top 10 hoodie cities in 2013 and 2014. The city also has cultural attractions like car jackings, homeless hippy druggies, and insane street theater.

Best sign I ever saw was “Wilimington. A place to be somebody” as you enter the part of Wilmington DE that is row houses of drug denizens.
Same with Arizona, a terrible place to live, a place I would discourage anybody from relocating to. It's HOT and we have rattlesnakes. And scorpions. Move to Eugene instead.

I have to admit that after having worked in academe most of my career, I'm fond of college towns. There is some downside but overall, the presence of a university enhances the desirability of a community, IMO.
I'm beginning to think about retirement. I still enjoy work, so that is probably 8-10 years down the road. My wife and I are thinking a little bit about where we want to settle. We might just stay in Manhattan, Kansas or we might move, probably to the Northwest. Although our retirement location will probably be determined by where our kids wind up, Missoula, Montana is the current front-runner if we move. Coeur d'Alene, Idaho is the only candidate for a move which doesn't have a university located there.
A suburb of Los Angeles, First Lady Barbara Bush, who once lived there with her husband George and son George W. described the town as "lovely." It enjoys the typical Southern California climate, with mild winters and summers that are warm but with low humidity. It is a college town with a community college and a big state university just beyond the city limits.
The town is centrally located, served by two freeways and close to three others--downtown LA, the beaches and amusement parks of Orange County, Hollywood, and the Los Angeles International Airport are all less than an hour away--and it even has its own airport.
The town even has its own muncipal theme song.
The name of this town? Compton.
I think there are a lot of left liberals who moved from up north.

Berkeley? Any community with a major thoroughfare named Martin Luther King Blvd. should be automatically excluded.
I wouldn't want to live in Salt Lake City or anywhere in Utah, for that matter. The reason why should be obvious.
