NEW YORK – Japan is considering sending more emergency medical personnel to deal with the Ebola crisis in West Africa, Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said Monday.

Tokyo is negotiating with the World Health Organization to send “up to 23 experts, additionally,” Kishida said during a U.N. meeting in New York on universal health coverage.

Japan has extended approximately $5 million in emergency aid grants and four Japanese medics have been dispatched as members of the WHO mission

Japan has enough problems with Fukashima.
But then if the medics are radioactive enough then the virus will die before it can infect the medics.

Tokyo is negotiating with the World Health Organization

Negotiating? How much is the WHO demanding Japan pay them for the privilege of helping out the people of Africa?

I watched a science channel special on Dr Brantley last night. Had to put up with Matt Lauer who did the interviews but it was informative.

Dr Brantley and Nancy Writebol were both interviewed. Contrary to our speculation before they did not get it due to poor discipline with the PPE in the ebola ward. He indicated he was very confident their procedures there worked.

She didn’t know how she got it since she was never directly exposed. He was screening patients and thought that was how he picked it up. He specifically stated he thought he caught from a woman he put his arm around. So basically from her sweat.

Then what, some villagers kill the medics because the villagers believe the disease is made by evil foreigners?

Assuming that Japan is not totally hopeless in the face of terrorist threats from biological agents and infectious disease, it seems like they would have a few people from their bio threat units go to Africa for the experience.

Makes sense to me. It is the place to really learn what goes on in such an outbreak, not the sanitized and carefully parsed official directives of the WHO.

The survivors will possess invaluable information.

Most people understand entirely when nations try to find excuses to send some of the Special Operations troops to spend time with friends who are engaged in combat somewhere, or with other specialties of all types, that we search for places where they can get real world experience.

Eeeee-bolllll-aaaaaa ping!

Bring Out Your Dead

We’re gonna need

a bigger cart!

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...
