....if we have any A-10’s still flying.

Yeah, thank God we still have A-10’s. A conservative Republican lady whose name escapes me amended a bill to save them.

F-16’s and F-18’s used as well.

I wonder where the F-16s are flying out of?

Truck bed mounted 50 caliber chain guns is all I’ve seen so far but they probably have Stinger missiles and manpad systems

"On Mar. 27, 1999, the fourth night of Operation Allied Force over Serbia, an F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter jet was shot down while returning to Aviano airbase, in northern Italy after bombing a target near Belgrade."

It was invisible to radar but not to the naked eye. And the Serbian air defenses somehow knew where and when to look for incoming bombers.

I think that was the first combat for the F117A but maybe it was used in Operation Just Cause (Panama) 1989. I think by that time the F117A was in the white world.

...he was a Bush era war protester...

Tell him we used the same technology to locate ISIS facilities in Syria that we used to locate Iraqi WMD factories.

someone in Syria might be able to target 15/16/FA18/.

I wouldn’t countenance sending aircrew into harms way in less than the most capable systems we have if there was a chance they could be targeted. Rus “advisors/customer support” might very well be using S300 or better SAM systems.

Good for you. I happened to briefly join a conversation about ISIS and a guy that I know is a liberal was there when I walked up. I said “Obama is just another warmonger. I sure wasted my vote for the disaster he’s turned into”. Then I walked off.

Nothing seems more scare you $hitless than the A-10 Thunderbolt or Warthog. The sound and shape of those things is just amazing.

The problem over there is we supplied the enemy with shoulder fired anti aircraft missiles which would play hell on low altitude close support aircraft.

I don't think we'll use many Apaches, A-10's, 130 gun ships, and such. Mostly high altitude stuff.

Not from Turkey. Maybe Saudi.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but IIRC, the F-22 is the first F/A to be outfitted with Atomic warhead capabilities...

Before that it was up to the B1 Lancer and B2 Spirit (again, IIRC).

A principle I was taught was that you always use the best you have available - you certainly don’t not use your most modern weapons just because you are afraid of losing them.

First of all, if you’ve got that attitude, you may as well not have the weapons. But secondly if you’re worried about losing your newest technology, you should be even more worried about the survivability of the older technology - and remember that technology has living, breathing people inside it. You owe it to them to send them into battle with the best you have whenever you can.

(Old doesn’t always mean bad, and new doesn’t always mean better - sometimes older tech can have particular advantages in particular situations - but you don’t go old out of fear).

Thankfully the Russians and Syrian are not shooting. I guess we’ve decided that ISIS is worse than Assad; for now. I wonder what we gave up in the deal?
