Perhaps, but perhaps a group of Homo Sapien Sapiens who followed them. All going to say that it’s complicated and we know very little, though certainly more than we knew 100 years ago.

I don't know how accurate the chart and map are (and all such things are subject to modification if later discoveries change what we think we know) but it should be Homo heidelbergensis ("ei" not "ie" -- as in the city of Heidelberg).
