A happy marriage depends on a happy wife: study

A husband's happiness is significantly related to how his wife feels about the union, according to researchers at Rutgers University and the University of Michigan, who say the happier the wife is with the marriage, the more content her husband will be with life in general.

"I think it comes down to the fact that when a wife is satisfied with the marriage she tends to do a lot more for her husband, which has a positive effect on his life," noted Deborah Carr, a professor in the Department of Sociology, School of Arts and Science at RU. "Men tend to be less vocal about their relationships and their level of marital unhappiness might not be translated to their wives."

The team analyzed data from 394 couples involved in a larger-scale study on health and income who had been married 39 years on average, in which at least one of the spouses was over 60 years of age.

They were asked questions about their interaction as a couple: How much they argued, how much they understood each other and whether they felt appreciated by their spouse. Next, each couple was assigned to perform typical couple activities like watching TV or going shopping together and record their emotions in diaries for 24 hours.

Average ratings for life satisfaction in general were high, with husbands showing slightly more enthusiasm for their marriages than the wives.

"For both spouses being in a better-rated marriage was linked to greater life satisfaction and happiness," says Carr.

I beg to differ. For a marriage to be happy, both spouses need to be committed to each other’s happiness.

Apart from guys who dump the wife for some little bit of fluff of a girl at the office I believe that most divorces are initiated by women.Of course some of these petitions are legit...the husband’s beating her and/or the kids,he’s fooling around or he’s a worthless, lazy piece of excrement. But some are surely the woman saying,to herself at least, “I’m not fulfilled.I need space to grow”.
Those,IMO,are almost as disgusting as the guy with the little bit of fluff.

He'll go out in the garage and keep it to himself.

Yep, but when a woman is unhappy, everyone is damned well going to be unhappy.

Agreed.Unselfishness by both spouses...a keen awareness of the reasonable wishes and expectations of the other...is the ticket to a happy marriage.

The corrolary to this is that if the wife is not happy, she will make your life miserable

Next question: how to make her happy?

If she’s chronically obsessed & upset with everything that could conceivably be done (and done better), there’s not a damn thing he can do to get her to that state.

Is that what you tell your wife? I hope not.

Unfortunately, no wife.

and that is a huge fault of women.

center of the universe, they are not. they think they are the only ones who don’t have everything the way they want it?

it’s not always greener, friend. you get the wrong one, or she changes on you, and you won’t say “unfortunately”.

I’ve read a lot of these threads and too often the men rant and rave against women and it really makes me sad. Obviously women have changed a lot in recent years and are more demanding or something...

I’m a woman and the friends and family ‘women’ I’ve known have been kind and decent people. In my own experience I find it easy to be loving and giving if I am treated right, and by ‘right’ I don’t mean monetary things. I mean no lying, deception or outright neglect.

It goes both ways, two loving and giving people are what it takes.

Amen. I was married to the wrong woman for 17 long, long years. Find the right one, though, and there’s nothing like it.

You are correct. There are a lot of great women out there still if one can find them. I was lucky enough to find one the second time around - and she’s the prettiest woman in almost every room she walks into. :-)

I’m happy for you Kevin, she sounds lovely. Be kind to each other, it’s not that hard to do and it brings happiness.
