In conservative and libertarian circles in the US, there is sentimental support for independence based on gauzy and false notions that small countries are almost inherently more free and prosperous than large ones.

On the facts though, Scottish independence would be gravely injurious to both Scotland and Britain due to heavy transition costs and Scotland's inadequate economic base. An independent Scotland would lack the resources to maintain its current standard of living or to defend itself.

In addition, an independent Scotland would be ruled by the incompetent, resentful, and rigidly ideological Leftists of the Scottish National Party. They already issue promises of expanded welfare and talk like idiots of an independent Scotland making ends meet by raising taxes on corporations and the rich.

In power, the SNP would rapidly make Scotland into a thuggish, impoverished, quasi-Marxist satrapy from which investment money and human talent flee. My guess is that enough Scots see that menace for Scotland to narrowly vote against independence.

Agreed - but tragically “narrowly” might not be enough.
