Tired of Cheech & Chong pot jokes and ominous anti-drug campaigns, the marijuana industry and activists are starting an ad blitz in Colorado aimed at promoting moderation and the safe consumption of pot.

To get their message across, they are skewering some of the old Drug War-era ads that focused on the fears of marijuana, including the famous “This is your brain on drugs” fried-egg ad from the 1980s. […]

“So far, every campaign designed to educate the public about marijuana has relied on fear-mongering and insulting marijuana users,” said Mason Tvert, spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, the nation’s biggest pot-policy advocacy group. …

Heroin and other hard drugs can make one addicted. Psychotropic drugs can make one have psychotic episodes. I would call that equivalent in severity.

I’ve always been on the side of decriminalization (as a compromise). Better to pay a small fine if caught than to pay a tax all the time.

In a year or two, we should have pretty complete data from CO & WA that will answer a lot of questions and speculation.

Just a couple fast corrections to some Freeper statements:

Modern pot is NOTHING like LSD.

Pot is not a hallucingenic.

Saying that pot today is more potent than the pot of yesterday is true, but it’s the effect is pretty much the same. It’s like drinking a beer with an alcohol content of 6 instead of a 4.

Right on!
A lethargic, unmotivated (except to eat) populace on dope is more likely to follow TV sitcoms, eating popcorn in a recliner chair and dozing off than actually listening to the RESPONSIBILITY passed down to us by the Founding Fathers.
Tyranny and decadence to follow...
Islam’s swift sword will be made easier.

Pot is only a “Gateway” drug because one has to go to the black market to get it. Once there, other drugs are on offer as well.

That's a really interesting point. I never really considered it from that angle. I can't say I agree or disagree, but it's certainly worth my time to think about it.

The underground illegal marihuana industry still exists in Colorado undercutting the cost of the legal dope.

So much for “tax the hell out of it” or even “license it, regulate it, and things will be fine”.

And one “candy bar” is actually a dozen servings. Why not make them M&M sized dope chocolate pills then? Or reduce the strength to single dose chocolate bars?

From what I've read, MJ is a far better choice for things like pain relief, nausea, etc., than opiod narcotics like Vicodin, Oxycontin and Percocet. At the very least it should be legalized for medical use.

Okay, seriously...haven’t we all lived in “that” neighborhood where you all knew who the family was that smoked pot...I mean, lawn not mowed, kids clothes were all basically hand me downs and worn repeatedly before Grandma got pissed off enough to wash them because mom and dad were lacking any real motivation to do laundry or mentor, guide, or even God forbid discipline the children, usually had the utilities out four or five times a year to shut off the service for lack of payment.

I mean really, we want a whole nation of this...drinking beer and whiskey never made me or anyone in my family slow, lazy, and incapable of fulfilling basic daily responsibilities — Weed, weed on the other hand has never made anyone a winner.

“Pot is not a hallucinogenic.”

Wrong, check with a doctor that deals with hallucinogenics, and knows how to spell it.

If the potheads were serious about providing a safe product, they would develop standards and dosing in line with USP-NF protocols .

Also consider how many people may try some other drug from the black market dealer when police actions have “dried up” the local supply of marijuana.

At the legal pot store, there should always be a supply.
