Interestingly, we eliminated Northern Illinois University for some of the reasons you mentioned: We didn't like the looks of the common areas, parts of the campus felt "worn out" while others were meticulously maintained. We were only shown the oldest dorms which frankly, I don't think I'd let my worst enemy live in and after our visit I got online and read about some "racial unrest" between the hispanic and black students.

And what they say about sticker price, believe it. My youngest daughter has worked in the admissions office for all four years. As she got closer to the people she was working for, our aid magically started increasing. The last year we had two kids in school, the special scholarships for her increased. The net price to us one semester was so low we paid cash. Like walking around cash.
