Guest column: We need groceries, not guns at Michigan Kroger stores
mlive.com ^ | 9-11-2014 | Linda Brundage

Don’t skateboard at Kroger – it’s against the rules. Bringing food from outside the store is also strictly prohibited. And please don’t think about grocery shopping at one of the 50 or so Kroger grocery stores in Michigan without a shirt: you run the risk of being asked to leave.

But, if you’d like to peruse the produce aisles with a semi-automatic rifle slung across your shoulder, go right ahead. Kroger thinks that’s just fine in states where it is legal to openly carry guns, like Michigan. In fact, the grocery store chain has publicly stated that it doesn’t want to put employees in the position of having to “confront” a customer openly carrying a firearm. Instead, shoppers are left to determine whether the person in aisle five with an assault rifle is a “good guy” with a gun or a “bad guy” with a gun.

How would someone possibly know the difference?

In Michigan, as in many other states, people can easily buy rifles, even high-powered military-grade assault weapons, without a criminal background check. An estimated 6.6 million gun transfers occurred in 2012 without the buyers undergoing a criminal background check — despite polling that shows 92 percent of all Americans and 74 percent of NRA members support background checks on all gun sales. So, mothers pushing grocery carts with their children inside have no idea of whether the gun-toting grocery shopper is making a political statement, has a criminal record or is about to commit a crime.

As it should be.

Strict observance of the Constitution really bothers the leftists, doesn't it?

People like Linda Brundage are the same people who posted “no colored” at their stores. She is following the same logic, how does one know a good colored from a bad colored?

Shame on these people for attacking all our civil rights.

Yeah? What's wrong with that? Afraid someone's going to shoot up the turnips? Is the asparagus hoplophobic? Do the shallots shiver and shake when an armed man walks by?

Or is it just you?

Show me one incident -- one -- when a legal-carry citizen went nuts in a Kroger's and riddled the place. You can't. It's never happened. So pull up your panties, get over yourself, and quit whining about boogeymen that will never materialize. IF the time ever comes when a nutball opens up in a Kroger's, you'll be glad there are half a dozen armed men in the produce aisle to turn him into a vegetable.

Does that hinder you filling your shopping basket? Kroger sells groceries. The more the better. I would think they would kick someone throwing produce into the air and firing at it out of the store, just as they would someone tossing it up and hitting it with a ball bat.

I do like that... it puts the onus of being a violator of civil rights back on them, and you tied it to the race card...

Well done... I may steal that.

Follow a black guy? I'm sorry. That was uncalled for and I should have that post deleted.

Someone needs to send her a clip of the latest mob stomping at a Kroger store.

Perhaps “Swiss Cheese” would work better. ;-)

...dumbass. The “bad guy” doesn’t come in with an assault rife and shops. He shoots and robs.

Unfortunately, the Kroger nearest me is 40 miles away; I’m going to have to schedule a road trip.

This is what happens sometimes at Kroger when one doesn't "open carry":

In some areas of Michigan (urban areas, uh ya know?), I think that might be prudent.

But truthfully, I don't think an evil black semi auto military grade rifle would be my choice. I'm thinking a nice Remington 870 shotgun, loaded with #4 buckshot might be preferable. A little extra of the good old intimidation factor.

Just as a note, I don’t believe that there is a single supermarket (of any brand) by the normal definition of “supermarket” in Detroit.

Detroit is open carry with stand your ground laws and a police chief who encourages armed citizens to defend themselves.

Here is the police chief’s weekly report for the week ending on the 7th.

https://www.detroitmi.gov/Portals/0/docs/police/Crime%20Stats/Crime%20Stats%20for%20Week%20Ending%209-7-14.pdf

I like his attitude. He says criminals will continue to shoot each other and he’ll investigate those shootings but won’t waste more police resources than absolutely necessary. He says criminals don’t cooperate anyway.

basically common sense.

if they don’t look like a gangsta thug and have a mean looking scowl on their face, calling you cracka and ‘kill the white girl!’ and that kind of stuff, you are probably okay.

it is when they burst into a store with masks on and the guns ready to use is when it’s a problem. walking in with them on their backs - like a regular’person - saying hi, smiling, getting a cart, and starting to shop - again like a normal person - your common sense is that they are not a hardened violent criminal.
