Blood group 'link to memory loss'

People with AB blood, found in 4% of the population, appear more likely to develop thinking and memory problems than those with other blood groups.

The study, published in Neurology, builds on previous research showing blood type may influence heart risk.

A charity said the best way to keep the brain healthy was a balanced diet, regular exercise and not smoking.

A US team led by Dr Mary Cushman, of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Burlington, analysed data from about 30,000 US citizens aged 45 and above

...

"Blood type is also related to other vascular conditions like stroke, so the findings highlight the connections between vascular issues and brain health. More research is needed to confirm these results."

Commenting on the study, Dr Simon Ridley, head of research at Alzheimer's Research UK, said the research did not look at risk of dementia, and it was too early to say whether AB blood group might be linked to a higher risk of the condition.

"Current evidence suggests the best ways to keep the brain healthy are a balanced diet, not smoking and regular exercise," he said.

People with AB can’t catch a break. They are also at the highest risk for heart disease, too. Perhaps it has something to do with inflammation.

My wife always asks why her blood type is not included on blood test results. Is this some secret test not to be divulged?

I knew mine decades ago from the service, so why should it be a mystery for civilians?

Have her donate a pint of blood, and they will tell her what type she has.

The team also looked at blood levels of a protein that helps blood clot, called factor VIII, high levels of which have been linked to a higher risk of cognitive impairment and dementia.

Those in the study with higher levels of this protein were 24% more likely to develop thinking and memory problems during the study than those with lower levels. Additionally, participants with blood type AB had a higher level of factor VIII than people from all other blood types.

A blood type is not included in “routine” tests for blood chemistries and blood counts. If she has ever given birth to a baby in a hospital, her blood type is already a part of her medical record and her doctor could request a copy of it for her. If not, and she would like to know her blood type, all she has to do is ask her doctor to order the test.

She should have been told when she had the first child. And you should have been blood typed then too. Regardless of the Military blood typing.

There are big issues between parents who have opposite + or - blood types. My eldest went through that. She is A-, he is O+, they don’t mix in the baby making thing. You have to have that special shot, are chances are the baby is miscarried. She lost 1, nearly lost the only 1 she did carry to term. She had to wait for the special shot until her 7th month.

We typed our own blood in HS biology.

Red Cross donor cards show blood type. Has she ever donated blood?

Eat coconut oil, too!

A few months ago when I researched that I found ZERO independent, peer-reviewed experimental data supporting that. I believe there is one woman doctor, who's selling a book on the subject, who's pushing it due to a "miracle cure" in her family. Nothing like a money-making personal anecdote lol.

There are some natural substances with experimentally documented benefit on memory such as Curcumin, fish oil, and Bacopa.
