Just an entire set of sports built around it... open wheel, stock car, drag, bandit, go kart, etc etc etc. It's only every American kid's first introduction to power and freedom and adulthood. We only fall in love with our first car because of it. Many of us discover love and sex in our first car, too. Tons of idiot, drunk, and/or blind elderly drivers to dodge, along with pedestrians, bicyclists, kids, pets, wildlife, etc. Yeah, nothing exciting at all.
If my daily commute included drafting at 200MPH it would be exciting. But out here in the real world my daily commute rarely gets me over 50MPH. As for the freedom and adulthood thing, that’s nice until you’re about 25 and the REST of adulthood (bills, spouse, household tasks) takes hold. After that a car is just a tool, you get from point A to point B. OK maybe you have a really nice car, or maybe the occasional really nice drive. But most of the time is the same low speeds on the same roads at the same times often times with the same other cars on the road. It’s like the morning breakfast, just another part of the daily routine, part of what we go on vacation to get away from.
