“Can’t send an 18 year old off to fight in a war and then tell them they are too stupid to vote.”

That argument had more validity when they were forced via draft. Now it is by choice. Anybody stupid enough to join is too stupid to vote.

Wild in the streets?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember that, it is a good lesson as to why youngsters, even most 18 year olds, are just too young and dumb to have responsibilities.

Can they? They damn sure should be able to vote if they are old enough to fight wars, which I dont think they are.

Anyone who has been on public assistance for more than one year should lose voting rights. You want to be taken care of like a child? Ok but children don’t vote.

“They’re old enough to vote and die for their country”.......

How many of their votes got counted at the last several elections, in particular those who voted from overseas?

Stop the cheating first. Get rid of open primaries.

Seems reasonable that voting and responsibility for one’s own health insurance should go together.

“They’re old enough to vote and die for their country”.......

OK, perhaps only those over 18 and IN THE MILITARY should be allowed to vote. At least when they see what a mess their “leaders” have gotten them into they would have a good reason for voting.

Many kids (and adults) who actually do vote don’t have a clue what the hell they are voting for or against and only react to the brainwashing they received from their schooling.

No representation without taxation.

Ah, the answer there is 18 yo olds in military can vote.

Or raise the age of military service to 21.

Then lets raise the age for enlisting into the Armed Services up to 21. The clown which wrote this article obviously has never been in the service.

We need to have voter reforms ...you can only vote if you have a good paying job (no not a $15/hour burger flipper) and if your IQ is above 100. Also you need to speak (and understand) English. (California has ballots in 168 languages).

Sadly the 18 year old drunk driver may also kill innocents. I agree 18 year olds and probably most 21 year olds if they are in college are too stupid to vote. I also think anyone who gets welfare shouldn’t get to vote. But what do i know.

Thanks! I think lots of the FReepers here would make excellent Presidents. One reason I would never run is because I’d rather not risk assassination by the welfare thugs, since my rhetoric would unapologetically condemn them.

21.

But, then a nice slap in the face occurred. FDR lowered the draft age from 21 to 18. That's how part of controversy of being shipped off to die for your country, but you have no political say in the process started in recent memory.

According to this, many of the Fathers supported property ownership as a requirement for voting. These requirements were phased out toward universal suffrage, although it took until about the 1850s to do so. The Founders wanted to extend voting rights to veterans, but were not universally in agreement on enfranchising others; I think that if there was a broad agreement on reform, they would have probably done so during the Constitutional Convention.

I really can’t argue with that.

Certainly not the brightest bulbs.

Change the day of voting to Saturday. Most are not at work. Higher turn out.

***********

Week end voting is now available in many states along with extended voting days.

Yes, the constitution left a whole lot to the states. How to go about electing reps and presidents reflected the constitution's fundamental federalism.

Booting themselves from the senate was idiocy. They denied themselves consent of the governed. In order for the constitution to remain consistent with republicanism, every clause that acted on the states should have been repealed along with the 17th.

I agree with almost all of this, although I think it’s reasonable for feds to ban welfare recipients of federal money, federal politicians, federal political staff, and federal bureaucrats from voting. On other matters, we should certainly allow states and state legislatures to have their say.

When I think about it, every amendment since and including the 14th should either be heavily rewritten or repealed. For example, the 27th Amendment should be rewritten to prohibit any lawmakers from receiving a salary or benefits paid for by taxpayer dollars.
