Pit bulls 8 and a half times more likely to attack

KIRO 7 obtained dog bite statistics in Western Washington and found out that pit bulls are 8.5 times more likely to attack than other breeds.

Some say there's no such thing as dangerous dog breeds, but Mike and Stephanie Bright say that's not true.

Their daughter, Stephanie, was 13 months old when they say she was bitten by a pit bull at a birthday party in Tacoma.

"All of a sudden I was sitting at one table and she was at another, and the children were all having a good time, too, and the dog started to come close to her and I got up to make sure that no situation happens. And what do you know, the dog bit her in the face -- grabbed her in the face made a loud barking noise at the same time while it did it," said Mike Bright.

"Imagine her face -- the dog grabbing her by the head literally from cheek to the top of her skull," said Stephanie Bright.

Almost a year later, the Brights say they are still reeling.

"In that split second it could go from being a good dog to a monster," said Mike Bright.

The dog that the Bright's say bit Sylvia is a pit bull named "Lazy.”

Mike Bright said Lazy's owner told him he wouldn't hurt a fly.

"Pit bulls are most definitely dangerous," said Mike Bright.

KIRO 7 wanted to find out if the perception of pit bulls being more dangerous than other breeds is a reality, so we pulled dog bite data from King County, Pierce County, Snohomish County and the city of Tacoma:

Please, you are making an idiot of yourself.

Wait! Are you John Semmens?

I knew there had to be more behind this than apparent idiocy.

Get a grip! Are you always this hysterical?

Bingo! And lest we forget, PBs are being bred by the most unscrupulous breeders on the face of the Earth to be as aggressive as possible.

The sweet ones are fed to the aggressive ones or are abandoned. The aggressive ones are allowed to grow up, fight, and breed offspring animals that share the same traits.

What we’re left with are animals that are not representative of the breed at all.

Pits can be as sweet, loyal and trustworthy as any breed out there - IF we can rescue them from the human scum who are breeding them, raising them, buying and selling them, training them and abusing them into becoming fighting dogs.

I wonder if people really believe that if Pit Bulls were banned tomorrow or exterminated, the dog fight crowd wouldn’t turn its attention to another breed and ruin it in the public’s mind, too?

Pit Bulls should be known as the most abused dog breed, not the most vicious. imo

"While being attacked by any dog is at least annoying, I’m more interested in which dog attacks are more likely to result in death, amputations, and permanent disfigurement."

And that's the only relevant point.

I have a Chihuahua/Border Terrier mix. He's not unlike the Border Terrier in "Something About Mary". Vicious little sh!t and FEARLESS.

But when he flies off the handle, worse case, somebody has something to laugh about.

With an 85lb Pit, you have a dead body.

Discussion with the ignorant and obsessed is a waste of our time, but I guess someone has to do it.

I used to think that it was the owners and not the breed. Then the year-old dog of a couple who had lovingly raised the dog from a pup suddenly turned on the wife who was sitting on the couch with the dog. The husband had to shoot it while its jaws were still clamped onto the wife’s arm.

There ARE plenty of people who mistreat this breed and train them to be mean, but I think there is something within the breed too.

For dogs, at least, genetics are destiny.

“With an 85lb Pit, you have a dead body. “

True. Even smaller pits can kill. I read through many attack accounts and the pits have such an effective attack strategy that their prey (people) are often too stunned to respond. A suprising (to me) number of accounts entail the dog jumping up and grabbing the lower jaw. With a grip on the jaw, the dog begins to thrash it’s body to rip the jaw free. In children this works horribly well but adults are hard pressed to respond to this too - you’re in pain and disbelief etc.

Reading through some of the attack accounts on dogsbite.org, the scene of a pit bull attack can resemble something much worse than what people expect of a dog bite. A witness described as more of a “war zone” look with multiple ambulances, pools of blood, detached flesh or limbs, police searching the neighborhood armed for the dog(s) etc.

With an attack on two children, the medical team treating the little boy prepped him for transport to a trauma hospital and when he was wheeled out, the medical team gathered in the treatment bay to cry. Unlike the more common bite and release behavior of a defending dog - the pits hunt for sport and hang around, wagging their tails while working to cause carnage- stripping chunks of flesh and limbs and people witnessing this are hard pressed to accept it because it exceeds “dog bite” and goes into “wild animal attack” territory. Recently there was an attack too horrible to imagine - the dog did remove the child’s face. I know the first responders were said to be traumatized but surely everyone else treating that child in the hospital etc. had to be traumatized too.

This kid was walking down the street with her mother, the pit runs diagonally through a 4 way intersection, wagging it’s tail as it heads for it’s prey, a child.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bx5nMvuWCXc

WHile attacking it keeps wagging it’s tail - bystanders described its glee. This is common in the accounts I’ve read. Guy goes to take the trash out at night, two pits are out hunting and pull him down. That’s what gets me, well one of the things, the reason given for pit attacks is “he got out” or “they got out.” The dog got out, that’s why he went hunting people. I had dogs for decades and if they got out, the worst case scenario would be they’d return smelling like a skunk or they’d tip over the trash...not go hunting people.

You are right. These reports and statistics, from multiple sources, over multiple years - they're all lies.

They're all lies in service of the conspiracy against The Truth of Pit Bull Love and Complacency.

Poodles bite more people that pitbulls. Because they are so powerful, they get all the press. My pit is a big lover - blame the owners, not the breed.

Curious about the age of the dog, do you happen to know it. Many people report that prior to the attacks, their dog was treated like royalty and was very cuddly etc. but that a hormonal change between the ages of of 18 months and two years of age brought out shocking violence without warning. So I’m curious when I hear first person accounts to see if that holds up.

A child’s face is a small price to pay for satisfying a Pit Bull owner’s need to feel like a bigger man.
