Russian women place first in the world in terms of how much time they spend in front of a mirror, a study conducted by U.S. company Harris Interactive revealed.

Fifty-seven percent of Russian women between the ages of 18 and 49 spend at least 45 minutes getting ready before leaving the house, according to the study, published in the Copenhagen-based newspaper MetroExpress.

Dutch women came in second place, with 49 percent of them spending the same amount of time getting dolled up.

British women came in third, with 44 percent; Polish women took fourth place, with 32 percent; and Germans placed fifth, with 26 percent.

Spanish, Italian, Turkish and French women were found by the study to spend the least amount of time staring at their own reflections. The study was conducted over the Internet among 4,069 women.

I’ve noticed that young Russian women (i.e., no older than about 25) can be very pretty, naturally. But then they are in free fall down the attractiveness scale from there. It has got to be genetics (or a hell of a lot of vodka).

That makes sense. Young Russian women are in most cases startlingly beautiful, and they must appreciate God’s generosity. As for the older Russian women, some are still dazzlingly beautiful, but I imagine many of them wondering for hours at a time in front of the mirror - “what happened”?

I remember the sixties and seventies and the fashion styles, especially the mini-skirts (go-go girls), sexy movie stars (Kathleen Turner/Bo Derek/Farrah Fawcett/ too many others to mention), and the girls in the “fly me” airline ads. OTOH, there was Cher (early version, not the later improved model), smelly hippy types, and “sack” dresses. But overall, the girls of the sixties and seventies were the most beautiful and sexy women of my lifetime. The British gals seemed to be slightly sexier and the American gals slightly more reserved. But both memorable.

In my opinion, today’s women don’t seem to care much how they look to the opposite sex. Check out the babes in WalMart if you dare. Many look like the Russian shot putters we used to watch on Wide, Wide, World of Sports as teens. Back then, the Russians must have been hiding the attractive ones cause they sure didn’t look like the ones shown in this article.

Of course, every generation sees things differently. And as we age and things change, we have fond memories of the “good old days” and how things used to be. I may be old now, but I still like to look.

That’s just sad. Does she dream of waking up as a doll?

I've worked with women from Russia, Belarus, and the Ukraine, all of whom came to the US for graduate school and decided to stay here after they completed their studies. They were from upper-income families, but had living standards growing up that we would consider poverty-level. A Russian chemist I met here around 1990, as the Soviet Union was collapsing, initially claimed that the Kroger he was taken to was an elaborate set-up by the CIA to deceive him. When he finally realized that it was real, he broke down and cried.
