Plunge in California kindergartners' vaccination rate worries health officials

California parents are deciding against vaccinating their kindergarten-age children at twice the rate they did seven years ago, a fact public health experts said is contributing to the reemergence of measles across the state and may lead to outbreaks of other serious diseases.

The percentage of kindergartens in which at least 8% of students are not fully vaccinated because of personal beliefs has more than doubled as well, according to data on file with the state. That threshold is significant because communities must be immunized at a high rate to avoid widespread disease outbreaks. It is a concept known as herd immunity, and for measles and whooping cough at least 92% of kids need to be immune, experts say.

A paper that claimed government scientists covered up data showing a connection between vaccines and autism has been pulled by its publisher

Earlier in August, the journal Translational Neurodegeneration, an open access, peer-reviewed journal, published a re-analysis of a 2004 paper published in Pediatrics that looked at MMR vaccines and autism. The re-analysis of the data, by biochemical engineer Brian Hooker of Simpson University, claimed to find a higher rate of vaccination against MMR among a subset — African-American boys — of the original study population who developed autism than among those who did not, a finding that Hooker claims was suppressed by the authors of the original paper from the Centers of Disease Control. One of the co-authors of the 2004 paper, William Thompson, released a statement admitting to omitting the data after a secretly recorded conversation he had with Hooker was released on YouTube. (Thompson was not available for comment.)

For most diseases improvements in public sanitation and hygiene reduced the rate of infection, the vaccine had almost nothing to do with it.

1-in-68 children are afflicted by ASD. The effects of the MMR vaccine are much worse than the associated diseases ever were.

First . THERE IS NO CONNECTION BETWEEN THE MMR AND AUTISM. NONE.
It’s been studied to death and there is ZERO evidence of causality.
Second. Measles mumps and Rubella all have significant morbidity and some mortality associated with infection. I remember when young girls had “German Measles parties” so they could get infected to avoid getting later when pregnant.

One other thing. You don't even know how to interpret that graph. It shows the DEATH rate, not the annual number of infections. Thats a function of the fact that we made HUGE strides in medicine during that 150 years. In fact US cases were estimated to be 4 MILLION a year until the vaccine.



With a fatality rate of 0.3% thats STILL 12000 deaths a year. Not to mention the cases of deafness, blindness, and Subacute Pansclerosing Encephalitis. And thats JUST THE MEASLES COMPONENT OF THE MMR.

Good points.

I am not opposed to vaccinations. I am opposed to giving them to infants vs. 4 year old Pre-Ks or 5 year old Kindergarteners. At these ages I believe the children are developed enough to handle the vaccines without the adverse effects seen in infants.

I’m not going to waste my time going into the Autism - vaccination link. There is much on the web for you to read for yourself including a recent study just pulled by it’s publisher btw, which directly links infant immunizations with autism.

1-in-68 brain damaged kids is not something a humane person would turn their back on or casually dismiss. What is it in our country that 3rd world, non-infant immunizing countries don’t have or do to their infants which accounts for the US’s 1500 per 100,000 ASD cases?

No one knows why autism rates are up. Some of it is a change in the diagnostic criteria, but that doesn’t explain it all. BUT, the vaccine autism link has been studied and restudied and again, there is NO CREDIBLE EVIDENCE. Most of the stuff on the internet on the topic is crap.

What needs to be looked at is the ages of these kids when given vax, the health conditions of those babies when they are vaccinated (even a minor cold or infection could have causative repercussions) and the number of vaxes all dumped into little bodies at one appointment because it's cheaper, easier and more convenient for the pediatrician to do them all at once

Since the vax-autism deniers are still holding sway (kinda like the global warmists), it is hindering research into the connection of the body's reaction to multiple vaxs administered simultaneously or in short intervals, preservatives in those vax’s (another controversy, lab conditions and controls where those vaxs are made, and predispositions of some kids to being high risk because of their ethnicity, genetics, parental age, prenatal exposures or their sex

No one has explained why autism and ADD/ADHD (which are on the autism spectrum according to the long time pediatrician and neuropsychologist treating my kid) is skyrocketing, especially among boys.
