Earthquakes are known to generate electromagnetic fields and some odors resulting from the piezoelectric properties of the crystals in the minerals in the ground. They then couple with the atmospheric weather system and the Earth’s geomagnetic field. Many animals can feel these electromagnetic fields and some can smell the change in odors.

Another possibility has been some Solar storms and a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) event on the Farside of the Sun as of yesterday.
