FULL TITLE: Michael Sam was dropped by the NFL because 'no one wants the distraction', claims Buffalo Bills star as gay football player tweets upbeat message

Michael Sam is no longer attached to an NFL team and none of them appear to want to pick him up because his sexual orientation causes too much distraction, claims a Buffalo Bills star.

Offensive lineman Eric Wood goes on, more specifically, to blame the media for focusing on the personal life of the NFL's first openly gay draft pick.

'Blame that on espn,' Wood tweeted in response to Sam's inability to find an NFL home. 'No one wants the distraction.'

Wood's comment came after sports commentator Ross Tucker publicly wondered on Twitter why 'Michael Sam performed much better than most expected and still isn't even on a practice squad?'

This might be one of few times Rush was wrong, I believe he said no team would dare drop him from fear of governmental/media backlash. Perhaps the Village People might want to add a football player to their costumed crew.

ESPN (and much of the media) is partly to blame for pushing their liberal philosophy on their viewing audiences.

Michael Sam was cut by the Rams because he can’t play linebacker, he’s too small too play the run and his only viable skill is rushing the passer. So he’s a one-dimensional defensive end trying to find a spot on a team which has the best defensive line in the league.
He got cut because the Rams had better alternatives.

So I have to ask "If they didn't need another defensive player, why did the Rams draft Sams in the first place"? Seems to me they wasted a draft choice (although it was in the 7th round, not a big deal)

Maybe Michael Sam could become a cheerleader, and join this all-male African-American gay cheer team.

"ESPN (and much of the media) is partly to blame for pushing their liberal philosophy on their viewing audiences."

That's what I thought. The nail in the coffin was the ASSININE "showering" question.

The Rams players really got angry about that.

They simply thought it was a complete, and unnecessary distraction.

All the Rams players want to do is WIN

Having every GD news conference about some 249th pick is just too much.

Notice how there are no sob stories about the OTHER 1100 players who also got cut this week?

The NFL is a business. A BIG business that has no time for this kind of sideshow every week.

"Tim isn’t playing but he’s doing football on tv for ESPN. I suspect Michael Sam will do likewise."

At the very least Tebow actually PLAYED in the NFL.

What's the "angle" for hiring Sam?

And now we go to Michael Sam for his expert analysis.

Who? The marginal player who got cut from the team?

What kind of "expertise" does he bring to the table?

Uh, Keith, I never actually PLAYED at that level, but I sure know a lot about college football.

Tebow isn’t doing NFL games, he’s doing SEC conference college games.

I assume gay guy would be similar. There are a zillion college games on cable every week, I’m sure they could slot him in.

This is the area where Sam and Tebow have similar situations. Both deserve a spot, no GM or coach wants to deal with the various ramifications. Primarily, outside forces in the media and/or fan base demanding playing time.

Why not go ahead and blame it on Sam? He chose to ‘out’ himself before the draft. His combine performances were not that great. Truthfully his preseason stuff was okay but nothing special.

He wasn’t going to make it whether homosexual or not.

“If he had not acting like a a flaming homo, smooching and putting cake in the face of his boyfriend when he was selected, thereby enforcing every stereotype NFL fans feared, he might have been fine.

If he had turned down every TV interview and just said “Hey I just want to play football” he might have made it.”

Excellent analysis. I think you nailed it.

Exactly. College he could get away with those tools. Pros no way. I feel his pain. Too small for strong safety too slow for cornerback and white besides. Lol.

So I have to ask "If they didn't need another defensive player, why did the Rams draft Sams in the first place"?

For depth. The Rams do need defensive line depth, though their starting DL is the best in the league. But they found that depth in Ethan Westbrooks, a guy who can not only rush the passer but also play the run.

Sam showed he can sustain a rush, though he reportedly has no initial burst. He might make the 53-man roster of some weaker team which wants to bring him in on passing downs, and if not he'll be available for the Rams to put on their practice squad.

At the time they drafted Sam they didn’t know that they were going to sign Westbrooks and he would beat out Sam for the last DL roster spot.

I have to chuckle a little cuz a week before Sam was cut he was saying “I know I have the skills to play in this league” Apparently not. I cannot remember in at least the last 20 years a DE who was 6’1” most of them are 6’4”-6’6” and weigh 275-300 lbs and are almost as fast as running backs.
