also on ESPN
Gosselin bats vs. Papelbon with 2 outs
0-2
It’s over; Phillies firat combined no hitter: Hamels 6 inn; Dieckman 1 inn; Giles 1 inn; Papelbon 1 inn.
Congrats from a Red Sox fan.
.
BRAVES $UCK!!!!
Stop being an all or nothing team.
Got fighter jets flying low over Cleveland screwing with the batters. I thought Torii Hunter was going to hit the dirt.
Papelbon pitched the ninth, gave up nothing. Interestingly, Braves manager put a raw rookie, first major league at bat , in for J. Upton, as the first batter in the ninth.
That’s a bit of a distraction.
A “combined” no-hitter by four different pitchers is not a noteworthy achievement. It is, however, an indication of the offensive ineptitude of the losing side.
It’s rare, according to the Phillies’ radio announcers, there have been only 11.
Does a “combined” no hitter even count?
One of the things I HATE about modern MLB is the way starting pitchers are treated like long relievers. You wouldn’t pull Steve Carlton after six innings with a no hitter up 2-0. the idea that a starting pitcher’s arm falls off after 102.67 pitches is crazy. Maybe we need a 23 man roster to make teams keep them in longer.
Not for the starting pitcher; it’s a statistical anomaly, like Harvey Haddix’s 12 perfect innings which he lost 1-0 in the 13th. Nice to be able to say, “I remember when...”
Hamels walked the first 2 batters, 5 altogether, and a hit batsman. He was at 108 pitches after 6 innings, 40+ in the first 2. No way he would have finished the game.
Guys like Carlton, Phil Niekro, Rick Sutcliffe, Nolan Ryan pitched a LOT more complete games. Where have the 20 game winners vone? Granted Niekro was a knuckleballer, but he actually won 20 games and lost more with a horrible .380 Braves club.
What happened is that generally pitchers wouldn’t become starters until the age of 25. They spent the early years in the bullpen.
Arms don’t fully develop until the age of 25, so by making young pitchers starters and overworking them, they tend to flame out.
However, past the age of 25, arms can take a lot more punishment.
I agree with you there. There are so many statistics they keep track of now, it’s surprising we don’t have the answers to simple questions.
