That’s the problem. Troy and the boys have been hunting La hard for gators. Thus killing off the boys before they get that big. Not so much in Alabama.

There are some at the Kennedy Space Center that could make a run at it since it’s a wildlife sanctuary. I’ve seen some HUGE gators there but nobody with a tape measure checking them. And even if they were record breakers, you can’t do anything with them since they’re protected. Except the one that decided to lie down at one of the gates around 0430 one morning and impede traffic. He was blocking both inbound lanes and one of the guards took it upon himself to pop him after about a half hour of trying to coax him/her to move. I think I was either 3rd or 4th car in line waiting to get in to go to work.

Some folks feed them in fishing holes on private property, fatten them up, then put paying customers on them.

Biggest truly wild I ever saw was 17+ on Lake Monroe - two guys laid next to him head to toe, head to toe and that gator was still bigger!

The article says it is the record for the Safari Club International listing, but that gator is still several feet short of the actual record.

Louisiana Alligator Advisory Council

See under the section on size. The record in Louisiana is 19 ft 2 in. This is more believable because it is the website for the industry that controls the state’s official alligator harvests.

Guess the family gets lots of handbags and shoes this Christmas...

I'm curious..what's the price for a good quality gator hide?

That doesn’t make it the SCI record. They have rules on how the gator gets collected. 19’2” is dinosauric.

It is a huge gator. So why do they feel compelled to “long arm” all the pictures?

Finished Alligator Leather

Currently, depending upon the size and grade, finished leather is selling for $10 to $40 per centimeter. The measurement is taken at the widest part of the belly and measured in centimeters across the belly. A six-foot long alligator will yield a hide of approximately 36 centimeters in width. The prime part of the hide is the belly. The legs and tail are not ordinarily graded. Holes, scars and blemishes in the belly part of the hide detract from the value and selling price. Larger alligators over nine feet long tend to have calcium deposits called buttons on their bellies and necks. These buttons tend to take dying improperly and are not very pliable. Heavily buttoned hides may have character but are less valuable.

I don’t think they have long armed the pictures. They are as close behind the beast as they could get. There is even one where a woman and a baby are in front of it.

By “long arm” I think he means what some deer hunters do with their buck when they hold the horns as close to the cameras as they can get. It makes the rack look bigger than it really is.
