I couldn't resist buying the delightful dramatization of I, Claudius, starring Derek Jacobi (and many others, including John Hurt and even Patrick Stewart as Tiberius' dreaded enforcer Sejanus) on DVD, a few years ago.

Watched originally as a mini-series installment of "Masterpiece Theater," back in the late '70's. Worth every penny.

I saw it also. It encouraged me to read I, CLAUDIUS, a great book. I wish I could find a good copy of it and CLAUDIUS THE GOD which I have not read.

I enjoyed the diddys the guards sang when Tiberius lost his Legions under Varius.

I’ve read Tacitus’ histories and find politics to be just as brutal then as now. The only difference is the disgraced Senators today do not go home and open a vein.

I agree. Best TV mini-series ever and an outstanding lesson in history AND political science.
