“It is interesting that we know more about the Caesars than we do about King Harold and the kings who lived 1000 years later.”

True, but we know as much about King Harold’s academic record as we know about BO’s.

As you probably know, seeing your knowledge of Roman history, people should be careful in taking the debauchery tales of Roman Emperors as lock solid fact, Caligula included. What we know of them is from the writings of a few contemporary writers who all had a political spin. It would be like looking back on us and using the video of MSNBC as the repository of truth about 21st Century America. These writers were not objective historians, but usually propagandists for their current imperial regime. To discredit other family lines, like the Julians for example, was not uncommon to make the current emperor look better in comparison. A lot of the tales of debauchery is exaggerated if not false.

The origins of Islam are directly related to the borderlands of the Roman and Persian Empires. The Arab tribes on the borders were aware of religious thought within the Eastern Roman Empire. They borrowed and modified quite a lot of it. The Arabs served both empires as mercenaries. Some current historians of the period are know doubting that a Muhammed even existed. That the Koran itself was only written decades after the Arabs conquered the area. Their conquest was helped by the brutal war between the Byzantine and Persians brought both empires to ruin, thus allowing the Arabs to burst out of the borderlands against both.

You might consider Sunni Ali Ber of the Sohghai Empire.

Seriesly? You compare him to a brave and competant military leader, who as Emperor cut taxes and reduced the central bureaucracy?

Julian the Apostate pretended to be a Christian in order to secure the trust of the people.

Just like Obama when he got elected both times.

Nero and Caligula were both essentially hellhounds.

Just like Obama at the end of his reign.

Julian the Apostate. He was an underachiever who wanted to roll back the Empire from Christianity to paganism.
