Business Insider ^ | Dec. 24, 2012

Posted on 08/28/2014 12:33:51 AM PDT by CharlesOConnell

No one wanted to be president less than Mitt Romney, his son said in an interview out Sunday that raises new questions about the candidacy of the losing Republican nominee.

In an interview with the Boston Globe examining what went wrong with the Romney campaign, his eldest son Tagg explains that his father had been a reluctant candidate from the start.

Maybe now, here in 2014. But in 2011-12? Remember all the pent-up enthusiasm? I think she’d have done better than Milt, don’t you? At least it would’ve been a choice, rather than two kinds of Obamacare and two kinds of phony-baloney “centrism.”

I think she would have been presented as a laughing stock. I am not saying she “is” a laughing stock, but you know as well as I do what the MSM would have done to her.

It would have been a blowout nearing Carter proportions.

Then why did he do such a good job of screwing over Fred Thompson?

Romney had one job, to stop a conservative from getting the GOP nomination.

No actual conservative would have been caught dead or alive wanting POS Romney for POTUS either. Not then. Not now. Not in 2016. Not ever!

At least, conservatives can vote for Sarah Palin as they certainly cannot vote for POS Romney. I don’t assume that she would not catch fire and be elected. I KNOW that Willard wil neber be elected. Even if Sarah were to lose, she would reinvigorate the conservative movement and we would enjoy the ride instead of being bored stiff by the Taxachusetts flip-flp man or whatever. Sarah might lose Vermont but then Bernie Sanders or Patrick Leahy or Howard Dean would not do so well in Alaska.

I am not willing to put my brain in trust and delegate the choice of GOP POTUS candidates to the ridicule level of the Lame Stream Media which is more of a laughing stock than Sarah Palin will ever be. Sarah Palin credibly arrived at the annual Rolling Thunder rally in DC, riding a Harley. If Mittens tried that he would not have survived the ride and, if he did, the bikers would have disposed of him easily and with the greatest of derision.

You are part, as am I, of a growing contingent of conservatives who will never again vote for wimpy, elitist trash served up by Wall Street and K Street as GOP POTUS candidates. The GOP can damn well nominate candidates worth voting for on their on merits or LOSE.

God bless you and yours!

You misunderstand me, I think.

Its not what you or I think, it is what the 10% in the middle think.

The folks that do not start paying attention until the last two weeks. By that time the media would have poisoned the well so badly that she would have been blown out.

I ride a bike. I know what you mean about Mitt. He is the kind of guy that would sit on your bike without asking. [I had a real estate guy loose my business because he was trying to be chummy with me, and he hopped on my brand new bike without asking. Almost dropped it. I was ready to kill him.]

If she were the nominee, I would vote for her. I just don’t think it would get that far.

Just a different opinion. Not Palin Disorder.

RE Twice:

Only made it to “The Show” once. McCain was there first time, he didn’t want it bad enough either.

Mittens had a golden opportunity - the previous four years example - and he did nothing with it.

Even at the debates, when the moderators were clearly helping O; he should have taken their heads off.

Wasn’t in him. RINOs only know how to attack Conservatives.

And by “The Show” I mean the one-on-one phase; I know he was running in 08, but he wasn’t “there” like 2012.

He was on stage with the clown three times, and did nothing with it.

I kept waiting, hoping and praying for the Reagan question: are you better now than you were 4 years ago?

Common sense says that that one question should have been the theme of the entire campaign.

Ryan should have been asking: You said that if you did not have the deficit cut in half that this would be a one term proposition, why are you running again? We are 4.4 trillion deeper in debt.

Sadly Ryan is now tainted by his association with this well polished turd.

“...I kept waiting,...”

You’d have been waiting a long time, friend.

It wasn’t in him.

His “get up and go” got up and went, when it comes to fighting with Libs.

With all due respect, that is not a misunderstanding. The argument is often pushed at conservatives that we must always appeal to that magic 10% in the middle on the theory that they determine the outcome.

When Ronaldus Maximus swept to two national landslides (carrying New York twice!, Massachusetts twice! Connecticut twice! California twice!, etc.) his campaign people were not sitting around worrying about that 10%. They sought to engage the entire Republican base and then those voters later to be known as Reagan Democrats and then each and every group of voters who could be approached consistent with HIS and OUR principles. Finally everyone else was invited to come along for the ride and for the joy. In 1980, Reagan came within about 27,000 votes of carrying New York City! That was closer than any GOP POTUS candidate since Calvin Coolidge in 1924. He did that by carrying the hard core Chassidic Orthodox Jewish communities such as Lubavitchers (overwhelmingly registered Democrats) by margins of 9 to 1 or more. Their precincts are near or in Crown Heights in Brooklyn, Anthony Weiner's old CD.

A candidate like Romney or McCain or Dole or Bush the Elder is simply incapable of gaining the trust of such groups. Such candidates don't even try and, if they did, they would only look ridiculous.

When you are building a landslide on the votes of folks not part of the regular party base, those last two weeks of the campaign are dominated by the rising landslide. That is the feeling permeating the entire electorate including the Low Info Voters. They hear it at work and at church and in their sports bars and everywhere. Anchorfolks on the major networks, the three stooges of ABC, NBC and CBS, cannot overcome that kind of powerful buzz.

Understanding Mitt and the bike is a good start but the story rolls on. Mitt would probably break his leg or his neck trying to ride a Harley. If he did not, he would get to the Rolling Thunder rally with his Dudley DoRight persona on display. The real bikers would die laughing. Sarah Palin showed up, wearing black leather as though it was her normal uniform, worked the crowd briefly (but everyone knew she was there) and displayed a persona that was more a cool commercial fisherman's wife and a woman comfortable in her own skin than former governor of Alaska. She has a feel for the sort of qualities that gave Reagan the Reagan Democrats. You want to have a beer with her or a poker game or some barbeque and there is room for all of your friends who want to meet her too. They know that Sarah Palin is NOT Tina Fey.

In all of these ways, Sarah is the very best promoter we have seen lately (ever?) in the GOP. You want to meet her. You want to like her. She hunts moose and grills mooseburgers. In these ways, it is what I think and you think that counts and the 10% can come along for the ride. Tina Fey and the Harvard faculty and the Manhattan Left aren't voting for us anyhow and are few in numbers. I was a Reagan state chairman and I know these things to be true.
