Rock Songs That Can’t be In the QuickHitz Selection
Geeks & Beats ^ | August 15, 2014 | Vanessa Azzoli

It seems everyone has an opinion about the Calgary radio station’s choice to adopt the new QuickHitz editing program, writes G&B writer Vanessa Azzoli.

We certainly can’t forget the rock songs we love (and sometimes love to hate) that need to be listened to in their full length in order to be awesome. I’ve put together a list of some of my favourites. There are some obvious choices on here – I think every person I asked said “Stairway to Heaven.”

But, there are some on here that I think most of us forgot about. What are your favourite lengthy rock tunes?

Bit of trivia: Jeff Becks “Truth” album jacket had this notation on the back:
“To be played at full volume”
I took that advice but my component stereo system only went up to “10”.

When I was a teen in the mid/late 70’s, FM was so good. They’d play ALL the ‘long’ songs, full albums, full concerts..
Deep tracks that would turn you on to a band/artist that you otherwise would not have ever heard.

What’s been happening in Canada is that the radio stations now have to pay the music publishers for each song when they air them; thus they are extremely conservative in their choices for fear of paying for a song that drives away listeners. The result is that everything is focus-grouped to death and you hear the same lame tracks a dozen times a day.

I suspect that the real reason for cutting song length is to maximize the number of ad breaks. That would explain why most radio stations, including the local classical station here, play the longer pieces late in the evening and overnight.

Makes sense! I’m still bummed at how rock radio ain’t what it used to be.
It’s a shame.

“Karn Evil 9” by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The complete version, not just 1st Impression Pt. 2.

I even wonder why they even need to play music anymore on radio with Internet stations, Satellite Radio and iTunes.

The Outlaws - “Green Grass and High Tides.” The studio version is right around ten minutes, and during live performances it would sometimes stretch to about half an hour.

Pink Floyd - Dogs

I was thinking "Pigs" myself. Good choice. Of course, I never hear either on the radio at all.

“It’d be tough to play individual songs on the B side of The Cars debut album. All of the songs run together.”

There is a gap between “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight” and “Bye Bye Love.” But if I feel like hearing anything from that album I usually listen to the whole thing because it’s just that good.

I agree that the B side of The Cars is one of the best sides of all-time from start to finish, the songs flow perfectly.

I heard Dire Straits Money For Nothing the other day on the radio, and they edited out the entire verse:

That is outrageous, especially in the context the word faggot is being used.
