I think I remember that one. Serling didn’t disappoint.

I have about that one. It was conceived as a complete series and the ending was quite thought-provoking; answering the questions it raised would have spoiled the fun IMO.

One of my all time favorite episodes. Reminds me, I have “Forbidden Planet” on DVD. I think it’s the same space ship model.

I loved that show.

I remember him blowing up the worlds greatest computer with a simple question: Why?

During the late '60s I attended a math competition for high school students at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. They had exhibits set up for the visiting students. One exhibit was supposedly a teletype connected to a computer able to answer all questions. So I typed in: "Why?". It responded: "Why not?"

The end of the series left me cold, the villians were villians because they were afraid to cross the street by themselves and all they needed was somebody to hold their hand.

I’m sitting there thinking, this was one of the better plots I’ve seen on TV and I’ve invested 4 and a half years waiting for the climax and this is it?

If you want a show that goes on forever, they’re called “Daytime Soaps.”

I’m still PO’d that they never did season 2 of Caprica. The trailers were too intriguing! It looked like they were going to ditch the teen angst and reveal more about Cylon origins.

Yes, but we're talking about shows that should go on forever. Daytime soaps should be banned by Constitutional amendment.

My Picks:

Dallas

GLOW - Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling - even better camp than Batman!

The Original Crossfire with Buchanan and Braden - a conservative and a liberal who knew how to act like adults with each other

James at 14,15 and all the way through 80

Wonder Years - as good as a coming of age TV series as any

Underdog - my favorite cartoon growing up

Agriculture USA - the only game show dedicated to farming! Bonus points if you actually remember it

The Crystal Maze (I came across this one in England in the early 90’s) - the best game show I ever saw. Richard O’Brien created and hosted this (for those who don’t know he also wrote the Rocky Horror Picture Show and acted as Riff Raff in it).

Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf - you got to see the golf courses as the pros played them without so much commentary.

Get Smart - the combo of Don Adams and the red hot Barbara Feldon (still pretty hot at age 81!). Max, what’s that smell? Oh nothing. Funny, I thought I smelled a tarantula . . . well, you had to see the episode . . .

The only TV show which could have lasted forever, with suitable scripts, would have been the Twilight Zone and its spinoff, The X-Files. Every other show eventually loses the relevance race. But conspiracy theories and strange occurrences never go out of style.

Why ask why? Bud Dry!

I used to go to Poly Royal there every year in the late 60s and early 70s, then again in the mid 80s. Tons of fun. Probably a lot less fun today.

I disagree on Breaking Bad. What made it a great show, maybe the best drama show ever, was that it ended the way and when it did, before they jumped the shark.

“Firefly was great - but no show should run forever.”

Give the man a cigar!!

Shows should run just long enough to tell the story — otherwise, they’ll morph into a soap opera, within 5 years.

It’s particularly important for serialized shows to complete the story — otherwise, viewers will be reluctant to start watching them, and really frustrated when they end abruptly. Unfortunately, the show runners just can’t leave well enough alone. If a show is getting good numbers, they make the plot more and more complex, and add in multiple soap-opera arcs (will they, or won’t they? oops, they did — now how long will that last? and so on, and so forth, ad nausium). Then, one day, they notice the numbers start to drop, and they end the program abruptly, without actually finishing the story they started out to tell.

Oh, and Firefly needed another 4 or 5 years.
