A full-scale health probe is underway in Co Donegal into the death of a man who may have contracted the deadly Ebola virus, Irish health authorities have confirmed.

The body of the deceased man has been placed in isolation in Letterkenny hospital after showing possible symptoms of the killer virus.

Dessie Quinn (44) returned home from Sierra Leone two weeks ago. Before his death, he was being treated for malaria.

A source said the man's body was found this morning and no suspicion of Ebola arose until his death occurred.

Laboratory tests, which will confirm if he died from the virus

The HSE stressed the risk of transmission of any disease is considered to be extremely low.

Hahahaha. Really? Is that why his body is being quarantined?

Considering he socialized with practically the whole county at a festival last weekend, they dodged a really big bullet.

Few people die from Malaria if they get treatment, perhaps he had a heart condition or some other undetected medical condition that complicated matters.

Good question.

Five for sure.

(Yep, count the US, although they say the two known cases here are cured now.)

I guess an even bigger question is...If the airports are being screened (looking or folks with a fever), How did he get through if he was having a problem with Malaria?

Did anyone even check, or was the diagnosis of Malaria what got him on the plane?--or off it?

Good questions.

Supposedly there was a suspicious patient in Dublin sometime last week. Maybe he wasn’t malarial on the plane but subsequently developed the high fever associated with malaria and went to the hospital. I ran fever of 106.5F when I had malaria. You can’t miss fever that high.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Assuming, of course that they aren’t flat out lying when they claim it was malaria.

No need to panic the plebes...

His test came back negative.

Which raises the question of whether or not they consider co-infections when they do the testing? Do they check for malaria and just assume that’s what’s ailing him or do they automatically send blood samples to check for ebola as well.
