During my child’s Christening the priest talked about the light of innocence in children’s eyes, and how it is our duty to help prevent that light from being put out. I think this is very important. It’s not that we can or should try to keep them from seeing reality in the world. It’s that we need to be vigilant in their lives, emphasize that there is a right and a wrong, and not just a fuzzy middle, and to help them to make the right choices in this tough world we live in. Innocence and ignorance are two different things. One can know the world, but choose to not be a part of the ugly part of it.
For clarification, I certainly wouldn’t hold myself up as a role model. There are so many things I would do differently if I had the chance again. But we can do better with our kids, and I can’t think of a more important task.
