they forgave mike vicks, tiger woods, oj, so why not Pete Rose?
Yea I know why he’s white.
I did not know that.
I respect Pete Roe and his baseball accomplishments.
Not a fan of him, personally. He doesn’t seem like someone I would like.
In the big scheme of things, his gambling pales to the crap that the Steroid boys did.
What, exactly, does that mean?
I’ve always considered him a jerk but I respect his talents.
You were fun to watch, Charlie Hustle, back in the day
but that was way back in the day.
You voiced my sentiments exactly. Thank you.
It isn't a matter of forgiveness or punishment. The Hall of Fame should be for the Best of the Best. He threw that away with both hands.
Exactly! I’ve sure Gene Garber can attest to what a scam lil Hustle Boy is.
“But Pete Rose should not be in the Hall of Fame.”
I’d put him in the Hall, with an asterisk, and a biography that emphasizes what he did wrong. There’s a really important message there that every young kid visiting the Hall should learn about. He did wrong, and to be honest, there are things about him that really irritate me, but I highly doubt he would or did use performance enhancing drugs, and there are likely plenty of modern players in the Hall who did. That in no way justifies what he did, but IMHO this should at least be considered.
Rule 21 was posted in every clubhouse and every dugout Pete every played in during his minor and major league career, and his career as a manager.
Rose knew the penalty for violating Rule 21(d). Everyone on the field knew, and the vast majority of fans.
"Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible."
Pete, as a student of the game, knew exactly who Shoeless Joe Jackson was. People want Charlie Hustle in the HOF? Fine. Enshrine Shoeless Joe and make Pete wait another 94 years.
Rose has admitted repeatedly that he took 'greenies' throughout his baseball career. Amphetamines are a performance enhancing drug.
Get a clue yourself. I don’t care if he was a virtual superman. I spent 4 years in the Marines during his time. I personally met two “Reds” in my life and both were honorable men. I lived about 4 miles from where some of his “dealings” went down. I also remember fighting for Cincinnatian’s rights not to be made instant criminals (gun control) while the papers ran continuous coverage about him.
The x ray of the corked bat comes to mind. I wonder how long he had been playing with these.
Didn't know that. It changes the way I feel about letting him in the Hall. Sadly, there are plenty of teenagers and adults taking Adderall and other amphetamines because they think they will give them a cognitive edge.
it’sall’about what pete wants.
i think his ban should stay. it was a lifetime ban.
i wouildn’t. he lied all the way through everything. tried to be the victim.
i’m sorry but the gambling itself on top of denying it until he couldn’t anymore, makes him even worse and he should not be in the HOF, ever.
no better than clinton denying his sex with lewinsky until he couldn’t anymore.
then they all appeal for forgiveness. what crap.
b/c they didn’t spend years denying what they did, and denying it in court, once it was discovered.
I I personally don't care too much because I don't think he'd be in the position to get in the same mess. I feel it is a worthy compromise...to recognize his play, but continue to punish him for life for his errors by not allowing him to be a part of the game again.
Also, Reggie Williams stopped the first vote on making criminal of Cincinnatians own. I would defend him with my life. The man has suffered greatly from what I have read, so the life of patriots. Kudos.
We are forgiving——Boston finally forgave Bill Buckner.
