Vanity: Question about GooglePlus/YouTube

Posted on 08/20/2014 10:00:32 AM PDT by ru4liberty

What does it mean when someone on YouTube adds you to their circle? I'm not familiar with this person. I don't participate in circles and am unclear how they work.

Social media is creepy to me, so I don't participate in any of it. I hate GooglePlus, but I had to sign onto it in order to continue to participate on YouTube. Now I'm creeped out when some stranger puts me in their circle. Am I justified in my paranoia or is it harmless when someone does that? Does my YouTube name show up somewhere where I have no control over it? Can someone answer these questions in non-technical terms so I can understand it, please?

Also, somewhere in my YouTube profile, I accidentally stumbled onto the fact that I have a couple of subscribers. I don't upload videos. I only comment. Why would I have subscribers? And how is a subscriber different from someone who puts you in their circle? I can't find where to learn these subscribers' names. IMHO, trying to get around on YouTube is a hot mess. Too bad they don't have someone with the talents of JimRob and JohnRob to write their code.

I thought they +1’d you when they like your posts. I get a lot of those. +1’ing doesn’t creep me out. Circles and subscribers whose names I can’t see do.

Actually you didn’t have to sign up to use youtube. They will nag you multiple times and try to force you to get an account, but you can ignore the requests. Unfortunately it is too late for you since you signed up.

I was no longer able to reply. For a while I continued to use YouTube after they switched over, but not being able to reply frustrated me. That’s when I threw in the towel.

I use it because I get revenue on some of my videos. So far I have $75 this year.

I use Google for email, have a Picasa (photo sharing) account, but I will NOT sign up for Google+.

I did, and it completely screwed up my Picasa account. Google gave instructions for opting out, and I did.

You want the convenience of Gmail and Picasa?

The price is track-ability.

And that’s the way it is.
