I just updated today. Am I ok?

If you restarted and it is working, you should be fine. I think. But are you logged on? (I couldn't stop myself)

Starting to sound like Windows has regressed and now needs a command line while Linux is moving past it.

The Windows Mafia never seems to get sued for these things.

Many people who downloaded last week’s Windows 8.1 patch have experienced blue screens of death, and looping system restarts.

Those are a feature, dang it!

Haven't seen it yet on a Win8 box but I have seen it on Win7. It's widespread enough to call into question just how much testing was done on the patch. The occasional box with unsigned drivers and old apps, sure, I understand that. This many new boxes? Not so much.

This sort of thing happens but it's usually not without a severe impact on the offending company. A certain antivirus company I shall not name managed to push a patch one time that quarantined its own updater and nearly everyone else's as well, meaning you couldn't use the AV updater to remove the patch, and the other apps didn't update at all. The stuff had to be hand-corrected. If you have a couple hundred servers per analyst - we did - bad words tend to be said - we did.

Ever since Minix (precursor to Linux), I’ve made periodic starry-eyed attempts at committing to using Linux - all attempts failed rapidly & spectacularly. ...and I could build my own d@mn computer from discreet components & hand-drawn integrated circuits, and write my own operating system starting with OISC principles, if so inclined.

The amount of fiddling required to function in Linux is absurd. Windows & OS X admittedly have their own problems, but nowhere as bad as Linux.

I hope those guys working on React-OS get it done but it sounds like their goal is likely impossible.

A ‘Blue Screen’ or a reboot loop is an enhancement to Win 8x.

It’s hard to believe a company as large with virtually endless resources actually spent who knows how much time, money, and manpower to release such a colossal piece of shit! I wonder how many developers they had working on that thing, along with beta testing, and QC.

It’s so hard to believe that Windows 8x actually made it through that many layers of actual human beings and no one raised their hand and said: “Hey, this SUCKS?”. Kind of reminds me of the 0bamacare website....

I thought they got rid of the BSOD. Isn’t it, like, lavender or something now?

Oh, and you can apply the hoxfix only if one or more specific problematic updates have already been applied to the OS.

I wonder how many reboots you'll have to suffer through for that?

I still don't understand the concept of reboots for non-kernel programs. What a clusterfrack.

“I wonder how many reboots you’ll have to suffer through for that?”

At least two in my case. The first auto-reboot after the hotfix installation got stuck forever, and having no choice about the matter, I was forced to initiate a hard power-down with the power button.

I really, really, really hate having to do that, but had no choice.

When the system rebooted, it seemed as if hotfix was installed. At least IE still works, not that I use it much except fro my mshta application, and the system doesn’t seem to have gone unstable.

Still, the whole patch is clearly an insanely rushed matter, having to manually choose between dozens of different patches, not to mention that one of the download links actually had the WRONG patch file, which was a duplicate of another combination, and the patch file for that OS/IE version combo simply wasn’t available because of that mistake.

It’s mind-boggling how poorly this whole thing was slap-dashed together, even resulting in errors on the download page.

Microsoft must really be internally crumbling something fierce, given their recent horrific missteps, repeated destruction by multiple bad updates, etc. It really makes you wonder why the company is so hollowed out: excruciatingly bad management, affirmative action, offshore labor, etc.???

The best Windows update is called Linux or OS X.

I've spend so much time updating from 8 to 8.1 that I am fed up with this.

Such mess is not acceptable to freeware, let alone something we buy.

If you are not IT expert with AMPLE SPARE TIME on your hands, stay clear from Windoze 8.

I upgraded my desktop to Windows 7 a couple weeks ago. Pretty happy with it.

As a former boss of mine once declared out of frustration: "you have moved your mouse; please reboot for this change to take effect."
