After years and years of hosting Thanksgiving for friends and family, I am on my own this year. My friends are either overseas or have moved out of the area, or have moved to live near their children, and my children are scattered. I have no family. So I am on my own.

I am looking for ideas for something to do on Thanksgiving, some place to go. I am considering Montreal, Asheville, etc. I live in the Northeast, and would have about 2K to spend. I am not fond of large cities, would love to do something fun, and something that would not be considered unusual when done alone. I also realize the issue of how difficult Thanksgiving travel is.

I have been wracking my brain for a couple of weeks. Does anyone one have any ideas? I could use some help here.

Thanks.

Your favorite soup.

We help set up a facility for free military and homeless dinners. Actually anyone who wants or needs a free dinner lots of fun. Sponsored by wife’s church.

If you want to get away how about a cruise.

I volunteered at a hospice one time. You meet some pretty nice people.

If that's too close to your day gig try something completely different: Thanksgiving at Williamsburg, VA.

Grab a period dress. Get into it, lose yourself, and send us a postcard!

Have you considered volunteering at a local church or charity sponsoring a food thing?

My wife and I once spent Thanksgiving on Nantucket, stopping at Plymouth Rock on the way. Wonderful traditional Thanksgiving feast.

I would suggest visiting a local retirement home, Hospice, or similar for Thanksgiving - call ahead and see what you can bring or what you can do. Whether you are hosting, serving, or just chatting with people who have no one left or perhaps just relatively little company, you can make their day. I’ve found no better way to make my day than to reach out to others who need that human contact and make their day.

There are some interesting ideas here….some very different. I sensed that you needed something light - maybe that’s me reading between the lines.

I have tremendous respect for the “volunteer” suggestions and The Vatican, etc - I just sensed that not’s what you need this Thanksgiving. Either way, you have some interesting advice.

Donate a few turkeys and volunteer to help serve dinner at your local homeless shelter.

Best Thanksgiving you’ll ever have.

My family stays at this little gem every summer - it would not be suitable for swimming at Thanksgiving but walks on the beach and all the beauty of nearby Charleston would be fun for you to explore! We love it!

Not sure where you are in the northeast, but if you haven't been to Sturbridge, Massachusetts, you might want to check out Old Sturbridge Village, and have your turkey dinner at the Publick House in their Historic Tap Room, which is nearby. I've been to both Sturbridge Village and the Inn many times. The Inn serves turkey dinner every day, and it's real turkey, not processed crap. You can even stay there if you want.

I've been wanting to get to Plimoth Plantation for a few years now, but haven't yet made the trip. They're open through Novemer 30th, and both Sturbridge Village and Plimoth Plantation host Thanksgiving dinners, along with the fare at the Publick House. Here's the link to the Village:

Friend of mine used to go down to the maternity ward at a local charity hospital, and rock babies.

Go volunteer to work in a shelter or a kitchen for the homeless. (Or equal.)

Your adventure might just turn out to be one of the more memorable and warm experiences of your life.

Yes. Volunteer at the local homeless shelter or soup kitchen, or get with your church or neighbors and organize some bags of food for those less fortunate than you if you can. Nothing liking giving on Thanksgiving. God will triple your blessings.

I am living proof.

Williamsburg has wonderful Thanksgiving menus in their restaurants. They range widely on foods served and price. Make sure you try the Peanut Soup. :)
