Pope finds materialism a tough sell in South Korea Posted: 29 mins ago

It's a theme he has raised frequently during his pontificate, railing against the "idolatry of money" and the excesses of capitalism that leave the poorest even further on the margins of society. While his message has been met with skepticism among some conservatives in the U.S. who have branded him a Marxist, it has been welcomed in much of the developing world and even some South Koreans said Friday he had a point.

"We are living in the age of limitless competition. But are we truly achieving happiness?" asked Chang Seouk-kyung, a 57-year-old youth counselor. "If such a message is given by someone as powerful and revered as the pope, it will help people wake up, stop and look around them."

South Koreans have also been charmed by Francis' simple and humble manner — and surprised that he hopped into a modest compact car after arriving at the airport instead of the big luxury rides favored by the South Korean elite.

His Holiness needs to look across the Northern Border, into North Korea.
The argument against Marxism is right next door!

South Korea has been led by socialists for quite a while. They are starting to wake up and reject the leftists.

They’ve worked very hard to rebuild their country after the Japanese occupation and the Korean war. They really aren’t interested in going back to those times.

Wealth redistribution is not a solution to spiritual poverty which is a much greater affliction than material poverty.

Love of God and a devotion to giving Him Glory while following His son is the only way to happiness.

Christians are called to be charitable to their neighbors in need, of their own free will to help them in times of need ( the beatitudes) Government mandated charity removes the free will gift and makes one population entitled and another enslaved.

Right. Or if he wants a less rigid version of it, he should look to his home country of Argentina, where soft Socialism took a country that was in the top 10 in terms of wealth in 1900 and turned it into a basket case.

Socialism, in any form, is Evil. The fact that the Pope can’t see that is disturbing.

What a screwed up headline. It implies the Pope is selling materialism, and the first sentence implies the opposite.

Or maybe the headline writer is implying that the Pope is selling Dialectical Materialism, and the South Koreans are having none of that?

Someone get an editor, please.

Francis urged the faithful to reject "inhuman" economic policies that disenfranchise the poor and "the spirit of unbridled competition which generates selfishness and strife."

In a modern, advanced, division of labor society, the desire to gain and keep wealth and the desire to make profits are two of the preconditions that provide both the means and motive to increase the prosperity of society as a whole and raise the standard of living of the average worker. If one wants to help relieve poverty and create a flourishing middle class, the above are what are necessary.

In a free society, the desire to improve one's condition, and freedom of inequality and competition are additional necessary institutions that lead to increased prosperity and standard of living. The above can be demonstrated by economic theory and economic history.

Agree. The Pope should look at the effects of free society and healthy competitive market vs socialist society and redistribution of wealth mentality on philanthropy. High taxes and penalties for the hard workers in society are disincentives to free people giving back to a society that steals from their table.

How much charity was there under Mao and Stalin? Charity comes from wealth, not a thug like government that takes from one group and gives to another, while skimming a huge portion off the top for its elites.

I could eat it raw, but why do that when I have a fire.
