After further review, I think I understand what is being said here. He had a length of belt that allowed him to have his feet on the floor. He strangled himself by dropping his butt down. He ended up in a sitting position because the belt length was long enough for his feet to be on the floor but short enough to keep his butt slightly elevated off the floor. So he ended up in a sitting position while still being suspended.

The one thing about doing it that way, however, is that you would have to overcome the urge to stand up which prevent the hanging.

The only other explanation would be that he was able to drop violently enough to break his neck which seems unlikely.

He could have taking sleeping pills. Not enough to kill him but enough to go to sleep with a belt around his neck. Thus he died in his sleep.
