The old "chicks dig jerks" thing. I don't understand it either, but it's still going on, as I was recently reminded when I met the girlfriend of an acquaintance's high-school age son. The girlfriend was charming, polite, and extremely attractive. The son was everyone's worst nightmare of a son -- did hard drugs and engaged in other criminal activity, unwilling to work despite golden opportunities, untrustworthy, would rather lie than tell the truth, a jerk's jerk. She thought he was Mr. Wonderful. You should have seen her beautiful big eyes as she looked at him! I later learned that their relationship was terminated by the parents after he tried to rape her.
I have to admit that when I read about male-on-female domestic violence statistics, "chicks dig jerks" always runs through my mind.

Allow me to provide a clinicians term to the syndrome you described - “Jesustrix Syndrome” describes a female who believes her love for a man is so wonderful and life changing that she can make something good from the aspiring candidate for the Hangman’s noose she ‘loves’.
