Lisa Mason had taken out close to $100,000 in student loans in order to pay for nursing school, and was making payments on the debt when she died. Steve Mason said he and his wife, who had co-signed the loans, were contacted immediately after his daughters death and were told they must start making payments.
We knew if she didnt pay her debt we would be responsible by co-signing, but we didnt know that if she died the debt would fall to us, he said.
Mason said his daughters debt has ballooned to $200,000 and the payments exceed $2,000 a month.

I think it is just lousy reporting, and lack of math skills, which caused this report that principle doubled from 100,000 to 200,000 without any reasonable explanation.
Well, if they're federally backed, I doubt there's anything they can do. IIRC, federally backed student loans cannot be discharged in bankruptcy, even in the case of death of the primary borrower if you are a co-signer.
Which is why life insurance is so important.
100k/4 Years=25k year.
Sounds right.
I was wondering about having 3 kids...and then going to nursing school at a cost of $100k...bet she was using the money to live on..NOT just for schooling
What kind of interest rate are they charging for the student loans if they double in four years?

Really smart kids enroll at wgu.edu where they can do all the claases they want in a semester for a low flat fee. Can’t wrap up all the bull shit requirements without have to deal with some liberal professor or TA.
A person can graduate with no college debt and get it done in no more than three years while having time to work at least part-time.

Did they default?
It's astonishing how many people don't know this.
Another symptom of the government bailout mentality.
Just a quibble, folks, but the correct term for the remaining balance on a loan is PRINCIPAL, not PRINCIPLE.
It’s more than a single loan. They average 12%. Plenty of articles covering this...
Brother, you need to use the /s tag then. I was wondering WTF.
My first sentence should have been the clue.
Go after the original poster.
Can’t Obama just erase the debt?
I never co sign anything, and there is community college....for nursing, EMT, Core courses for a four year degree that covers first two years, and other trades. BLET for police officers....lots of careers with no student loans at the end....and the student can continue to live at home. NO payments and a good start in life.
