IF you hit the target You can get additional range by hitting water. Of course a 9mm will kill at distance or up close, if you hit an artery or vital organ or a brain shot. But the problem with high velocity 9mm rounds is they punch nice holes that aren't necessarily lethal or debilitating unlike a 230 gr. .45

The guy at the Gabby Giffords shooting killed nine people with a 9mm. A 9mm will kill as easily as a .45. Is a 9mm capable of lethality? Of course! But generally speaking it has no where near the mass to introduce same level of trauma as a .45, just as a .308 or 30/06 rifle round causes much more severe trauma than the current 5.56 military round

At what distance do you (or anyone else) really believe you will be engaging a baddy? Anything more than 15 yards or so is totally unrealistic. 500 meters? Really? At that distance, any real world scenario would demand that you walk or run away, not try to make a shot that 99.99% of us (myself included) would never be able to make. 9mm is plenty effective for civic jungle warfare purposes.
