In other words, the modern Tea Party.

Except that the tea party isn't libertarian, it is actually more religious and more socially conservative than the average republican, not less so.

Bingo! But we must be vigilant to discern which is conservative in the Tea Party. Remember Ross Perot? He did the same tactic, splitting the Republicans with economic reason, but social libertarianism. Ergo Clinton without a majority vote.
