BTW, it's interesting to note this was the first Hollywood film to use actual footage of the Nazi concentration camps. It's powerful stuff, though not for the faint of heart.
Good movie. Of course, almost anything with Edward G. Robinson in it is a good movie.

I think this is one of Orson’s thoughtful movies. For me it is as good as Hitchcock’s The Rope
My little daughter picked it out of a bargain movie bin a couple years ago. We both watched it a few times although she was only 5! Loved how the plot unfolded, especially the duping of the poor wife. Chilling.
Interesting how Hollywood used its creative force to go after Nazis. I’m trying to imagine Hollywood going after any of the country’s more recent enemies and coming up blank.

When you dovetail this movie with an earlier EGRobinson masterpiece, “Confessions of a Nazi Spy”, you will see the character Robinson plays, and the true American fervor that we, as a nation of individuals once held.
Yes, the auschwitz movies were put into the film, which must make deniers’ heads spin.
Welles’ character, ‘The stranger’, full-on German with that detached underlying sociopathic menace, is a study unto itself.

How true that is.
I would not put it up there with Welles’ very best, but it is quite good. Welles wanted to show he could make a film exactly the way the studio wanted.
I do not have a ping list at this point. To be honest, this is the first movie I’ve posted. I just thought it would be kind of neat to post a good old movie on FR. If there’s interest, I’ll try to make this a regular thing.

You’re more than welcome, FRiend. There really are an amazing amount of great old noir flicks on youtube. The nice thing is, that a lot of them are in the public domain and don’t have the copyright folks to deal with.

I agree. It’s not The Third Man, or Touch of Evil, but it’s a very good film. I do get the sense that Welles was under pressure to give equal screen time to all of the principals involved, which is probably why the last leg of the film is so heavily focused on Loretta Young, etc.
It’s a 7/10 flick for me, with Third Man being 8.5-9/10.
