USA TODAY COLUMN: BILL GATES’ TECH WORKER LIE

Business executives and politicians endlessly complain that there is a "shortage" of qualified Americans and that the U.S. must admit more high-skilled guest workers to fill jobs in STEM fields: science, technology, engineering and math.

Yet within the past month, two odd things occurred: Census reported that only one in four STEM degree holders is in a STEM job, and Microsoft announced plans to downsize its workforce by 18,000 jobs.

oooh noooo you mean Billy Boy has lied to us??? Gosh how can that be when the products he pushes are soooo wonderful? They never have problems and they always work perfectly. And of course he learned by watching Silicon Valley in the eighties bring in low wage not as well trained workers from Asia and India to displace American workers

Once you hit about 40-45 you will not get hired typically. I had lunch with about 12 engineers a few weeks ago in Austin and they have been looking for months. All qualified and experienced. And MS is laying off but still have numerous openings listed on their website. I just looked. Its all about outsourcing and it’s not going to get better in my opinion. Every one of them have heard the over qualified comments. Their all looking for life after engineering. And the wages have gone down dramatically.

The stories are all over the techy news posts.

I personally haven’t talked to anyone where the posted rate was even half what I used to make and then they express if anything came along better I would jump ship. Perhaps, perhaps not but I don’t think anything will be coming along.
Even when things were better most put in at least 50 hour on a regular basis often more.

Even the skilled trades are paying out at 15 year old salaries or less.

And the cheap labor keeps coming.

I know what you’re saying. I have a friend that lost an engineering job at 50. HIGHLY qualified. He was told by one company he’d have a better chance of getting disability! He’s not disabled!

One person I know that works at Amazon told those that are getting cut at Microsoft to apply there. He said there were plenty of openings. Not one of the people I know that applied have even gotten interviews, maybe in time.

I’m in the same boat but in the medical transcription field. I lost my hospital job about 3-1/2 years ago when they shut down the department and sent our jobs to India. I could get a transcription job today but I’d be making what I made when I first started my career in the mid-80s. It’s depressing as hell but unfortunately I may be forced to do so, at least until early retirement in October 2015. Some “golden years,” huh?
