Gandalf is just bad ass.
Personally, I can’t stand it when they invent new characters that didn’t exist, like Tauriel, then invent a crazy love triangle in which the made up character is involved.......
The only way Jackson can reconcile that love triangle with the LOTR movies is to kill Tauriel.
