I believe in this book, Extinct Humans that Homo erectus is considered human.

I looked for my copy of the book but was unable to find it.

Yes...I can understand that approach; we can use the definition of species regarding ability to mate, and we most likely would have been able to, therefore we are one species. However, there were clear enough differences in brain capacity and skull morphology for the anthropologists to give H. erectus its own designation. IMHO, I would consider it another species and not a subspecies or race.

I could be wrong, but then again...
