My grandfather used to say; “You eat a pound of dirt before you die”.

Ha! My mother used to say something along the same line: "You eat a peck of dirt before you die," and I think she was quoting her mother. Nobody I've heard uses peck (1/4 bushel) as a measurement anymore.

A peck! That’s alot of dirt! About 10-15 pounds depending on whether it’s wet or dry dirt.

I used to buy fresh oysters by the peck in a burlap bag at Christmas time. I swear there was a pound of mud in every bag!
