Before she was allowed to register and vote for the first time in Franklin County, N.C., Rosanell Eaton had to read the entire preamble to the U.S. Constitution out loud in front of three men in the county courthouse.
Eaton is black. The three men testing her were white. The time was the early 1940s, when trying to vote was difficult and even dangerous for African-Americans. Contrived "literacy tests" were one of the milder obstacles that were deployed to suppress the black vote in the South.
Now 93, Eaton is back in court. This summer she is the lead plaintiff in one of two lawsuits brought by the North Carolina NAACP and others to prevent her state from raising a batch of new hurdles to voting in this November's midterm elections.
That lawsuit is one of two filed this month against a package of voter inconveniences signed into law by North Carolina's Republican Gov. Pat McCrory. The new law includes cutbacks in early voting, new limits on voter registration, less poll worker assistance to voters and new voting requirements such as photo identification.

if you need photo ID to fly, to apply for welfare, Obamacare or to apply for a job, you should need photo ID to vote, period. Especially in the 21st century.
To a remotely sane mind, there's clearly no comparison.
Not a damn thing wrong with literacy tests. I took the same one. Of course, they were unfairly administered by the Democrats in power all over the South, a little factoid our Afro-American Friends have forgotten.
The "inconveniences" in the NC voter law proposed are no more than identifications required to cash a welfare check, or get an EBT Card.
The Goal: 1 African-American, 1 vote in 1 precinct.
Indeed, you needed a photo ID to join the North Carolina NAACP's protest against the photo ID to vote...
It’s always 1940 for the Democrats. Clarence Page is like a broken record, kids. What’s a broken record, Mister? Clarence Page.
I have no problem with ‘literacy tests’ for voting purposes.
If one is illiterate then how does one read the names on the ballots?
What a minute. Are you trying to tell me that Democrats ran the south from Antebellum days all the way until Nixon won?
Next you’ll tell me Bull Connors was a member of the DNC.
So! All this senile poser can do is to dredge up examples from before he was born.
Bull Connor was a proud Democrat, this we know.
All that Clarence Page & Eugene Robinson have left to dredge up and fling at their critics IS the past, and the distant past at that.
Oh, it's far worse than that. The majority of Afro-Americans, People of Color, Negroes, Minority Blacks, or whateva the hamndle is this week actually voted ....gasp ...Republican!
Why after the War of Northern Aggression, there were black Congressmen, Black Senators, State Senators, Representatives, Sheriffs, Mayors, etc ....all Republican! Incredible as it may seem, most Negroes who had children were actually .... gasp .... married ... in Christian Churches!
Then, all of a sudden, when Reconstruction ended ... the Democrats started Segregation. But Negroes remained faithful to the Republicans right up to the time FDR started writing checks.... but didn't dare end Segregation, lest he offend Southern Democrats.
BTW, that "Great Civil Rights Leader" JFK voted to preserve Segregation right along with those Southern Democrats.
Big shift: At one time, white people in the the South were mostly Democrats. Black people were mostly Republicans.
