I have a sensitive, inconvenient, and undoubtedly politically incorrect question: Why aren’t there more gay people?
I ask because there’s something confusing about our “culture war.” Given the prominence of the issue, you would expect homosexuality to be rampant in America. When asked to estimate how many gay people there are, most people guess that it’s on the order of 20% to 25% of the population. But yet another study has been released by the CDC giving a more scientific estimate, and it finds that almost 97 percent of Americans describe themselves as straight — the actual number who describes themselves as gay, lesbian, or bisexual is 2.3%. So the public’s perception is off by a whole order of magnitude.
It’s almost as if someone has been conspiring to elevate this issue way beyond its actual cultural significance. That is precisely what we find, and both sides are to blame.
For the moderate left, gay rights have to be magnified as a social issue because they want to keep alive the legacy of the civil rights movement. They know how much they gained by remaking the Democratic Party, the home of the old Dixiecrats, into the party that claims exclusive credit for the entire civil right movement—while smearing Republicans as racists. Their exaggeration of the culture war over homosexuality is partly an attempt find a new civil rights movement to fight over so they can maintain a manufactured moral high ground.

The study you’re thinking of was conducted by a self-confessed homosexual who used faulty methods to obtain his desired result.

Could that be because our culture celebrates homosexuality so much, that people want to try it?

The natural order prefers heterosexuality. That is why heterosexuality is the norm in the Animal Kingdom which would otherwise face extinction.
Reproduction, or lack thereof could be an issue.
...as it is quite likely that many homosexuals are bi-sexual as well, reproduction, in the natural way, poses no issue for them...and if faced with extermination, any distaste for heterosex will be quickly swept aside, and the act consummated...
...a more useful study would be to determine the population of bisexual individuals, as these people would be more likely to have some lasting influence on the culture going forward, that was unavailable to them in times past...
Actually I was already aware of that but my concern is that some people are silly enough to believe that garbage, even some heterosexuals are idiot enough to swallow it (the story, that is).
This isn’t the first study by the CDC or NIH to find that the homosexual percentage of the population is very small.
The left and the gays have tried to portray this percentage as much larger than it is for obvious reasons: To legitimize their influence as a political group and to persuade the straight population that they are a large and deserving subset.
Much of the push to portray the group as a large percentage of the population was to get more money for AIDS benefits by claiming it was a growing disease which was sweeping the nation. In truth, AIDs was, and has remained, a disease that overwhelmingly affects homosexual and bi-sexual people.
If an alien landed and watched a few days of popular American television, he’d infer that the population is 30% black, 20% hispanic, and 20% gay.
Unfortunately, there is an excess number of gay/lesbian/transgender threads on FR these days. Why do we perpetuate this perverted crap on FR?

Homosexuals cannot reproduce so they must recruit. Questioning why someone is not homosexual is recruitment.
1. That's no way to reproduce.
2. That's no way to live long and prosper.
This reminds me of Arlen Specter when he championed Ebonics. He was on a talk show in Philly and the callers gave the idiot a clue that this wasn’t the win-win he thought it was, that he’d jumped on that bandwagon a little late. So he dropped his passionate support and faded into the background.
The way I see it, gay rights are also getting to be yesterday’s cause du jour.
