The Reality of Survival: “Forget Good Guys and Bad Guys… The Prepared Guys Win”
SHTF Plan ^ | 7/21/14 | Selco

Posted on 07/21/2014 4:07:11 PM PDT by Kartographer

TV news and internet are covered with headlines like “shocking, captured Iraqis beheaded” or “they are killing everyone on their way” and “prisoners executed” and similar.

And folks who watch and comment on the news and videos who still live in a “normal” world without this kind of crazyiness going on, are shocked of course.

First comments are that those people and groups who are doing that are animals and they need to be “bombed to stone age”, or “they are not deserving better anyway” and then goes “they are all same there, let them kill each other” and similar.

While I would definitely like to see that fanatics getting “eradicated” there, there are more things that should be considered.

Most of the folks are not going to watch video of that violence, because it is too much for them (like this video that “promotes” ISIS), they will change channel, or simply open the page with news from the “celebrity world.”

People do not want to watch or think about bad things, people want to forget that, and yes, at the end there comes again that famous “it cannot happen to us” idea.

Do you really think that when (not if) SHTF events would be much different in your part of the world? Do you think that when collapse happens, you and people around you in your town will be somehow able to organize food distribution, security and safety for residents, and all those criminals and sick bastards will somehow disappear, and there is going to be new better society? Are you under the influence of movies and you think that good guys win almost always and that there is justice and sense in everything?

Be prepared and prepare to bunker up with your family when it really gets bad. Safety in numbers.

Imagine Muslim Albanians murdering their neighbors and relatives for anything of value while trapped in a large city surrounded by Serbs firing on the city. Or build something.

How far can you get with a truck driven on wood gas fuel??? Amazing!

I always seem to get some FReeper who complains about Selco's writing. As I have explained before Selco is a Bosnian and survived the Siege of Sarajevo, so english is not his first language, in fact what he does know of English he was pretty much self taught. He also isn't someone setting around in a cabin in woods or already hunkered down in a bunker somewhere. He's been there and done that and lived to tell about it. Here's a brief bit about him from SHTF Plan: For those who have never seen Selco’s work, he’s the real deal. He was there in the 1990′s when his city in the Balkans was surrounded by a hostile army. From one day to the next life as he and those around him knew it had changed drastically. The media, of course, told people that everything would be fine. But As Selco highlighted in a previous article, the reality of collapse was brutal. Peace and stability very quickly turned to war and madness. He details his experience in his One Year in Hell survival course. In the article below, Selco shares his views on what it means to survive when your entire way of life has been cut off from the rest of the world. For those of you who don't know about Bosnia and Sarajevo look and learn: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/picturegalleries/worldnews/9270205/Pictures-of-Sarajevo-15-years-ago-and-today-show-how-the-city-has-changed.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alQHzsq2eKY

It is your choice you can prep or you can stand around on a bridge waiting for FEMA to bring you a bottle of water, a MRE, a warm blanket and a kiss for your boo-boo and maybe you can even get your picture as you stand there on the national news.

The world is dry tinder just awaiting the right spark.

So listen to what the bible says: A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it. NIV Proverbs 22:3

Selco covers this in this article many times people just can not except that a breakdown is occurring even as they watch it happening before their eyes. Why don’t they realize it? It’s caused by a condition called ‘Normalcy Bias’ a mental state people enter when facing a disaster.

It causes people to underestimate both the possibility of a disaster occurring and its possible effects. This often results in situations where people fail to adequately prepare for a disaster, and on a larger scale, the failure of governments to include the populace in its disaster preparations. The assumption that is made in the case of the normalcy bias is that since a disaster never has occurred then it never will occur. It also results in the inability of people to cope with a disaster once it occurs. People with a normalcy bias have difficulties reacting to something they have not experienced before. People also tend to interpret warnings in the most optimistic way possible, seizing on any ambiguities to infer a less serious situation.

A good article on ‘Normalcy Bias’ is on our own ChocChipCookies Blog The Survival Mom:

http://thesurvivalmom.com/2010/12/29/normalcy-bias/

You either prepare and stand on your own beholden to no one or you become dependent on others to provide your basic needs and become their ‘serf’. Me I don’t want to be beholden to anyone for providing what is needed for me and mine. I certainly don’t want to have to kiss some ‘gubberment’ third class bureaucratic to try and coax some help from them, I don’t want some ‘jack booted’ thug herding me in line and telling me where to stand, sit, eat or sleep. And last but not least I don’t want to be shut up in with a bunch of ‘zombies’ and have to worry about not only trying to get basic necessities but having to fight to keep what I manage to get.

Just getting started or an old hand you might find my Preparedness Manual helpful. You can download the manual at:

http://tomeaker.com/kart/Preparedness1j.pdf NOTE! THIS IS A FREE DOWNLOAD. I DO NOT MAKE ONE CENT OFF MY PREPAREDNESS MANUAL!

For those of you who haven’t started already it’s time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, papergoods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, cash (I myself have been putting up change for the past few years both for the metal content and the fact that using change places to make what purchases you can will move you down the the list of possible marks during shtf), tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.

As the LDS say “When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.”

Again I like to recomend FReeper’s ChocoChipCookie Blog The Survival Mom (Please Blog Police let this one slide!) Where you can get lots of useful information like:

http://thesurvivalmom.com/2011/11/20/8-morale-boosters-for-any-worst-case-scenario/

http://thesurvivalmom.com/2010/02/02/survival-priorities-the-rule-of-three/

And More

Also there is Ferfal’s Blog a survivor of Argentina’s first collapse:

http://ferfal.blogspot.com/

And there is Selco’s Blog a Bosnian War survivor at:

http://shtfschool.com/

“There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger. Underestimation can be fatal.”

When the Fall happens it’ll take about 24 hours for that thin little veneer we call “civilization” to be stripped away.

I would trust Okies to pull for each other.

I’ve seen em do it in some of the worst disasters.

Tornadoes, floods, hail, etc.

We just run around helping out.

Eastside and Northside can stay in their area and fk things up.

Bad idea to cross territories and think they will exert any pressure.

Has Selco talked about the worst thing he had to do in survival? Societal collapse changes preconceptions of right and wrong if you want to stay alive right? I wonder what his worst eperience was that challenged his self perception and what his advice is on how one avoids becoming a monster too.

“Be prepared and prepare to bunker up...”

Develop plans B, C, and D. Your bunker may not be habitable.

I just hope the transition is quick. More scary than the partial rule of law we have today, where even Obama has to pay some attention to appearances when he ignores or beaks our laws - and more frightening than the complete collapse of law, when there will be no police or military at all - is the transition where you shoot one or more zombies in self-defense and the surviving zombies can expect police/military backup against you.
